Yankees, Indians waiting on Kevin Youkilis

10:22 AM ET 12.08 | Kevin Youkilis doesn't appear to be in a hurry to figure out his future, even if the Yankees certainly could use an answer. With Alex Rodriguez out at least part of next season because of upcoming left hip surgery, the Yankees made Youkilis a one-year, $12 million offer, but the third baseman doesn't have a timeline for making a decision. The Yankees may be forced to wait, because what is left on the free-agent market -- players such as Mark Reynolds and Jack Hannahan -- isn't all that appealing. They also are exploring the market for a right fielder and seem to have a void at catcher, but third base has become an unexpected, glaring hole. Though the Yankees would be the most lucrative choice for Youkilis in 2013, the Indians also are interested in the Ohio native and Cleveland's two-year offer may be worth more than $18 million.

Why would Cleveland want him? They're not very close to being a competitive team. He isn't going to be the guy who puts them over the top.

It should be a no brainer Kevin, do you want to be a starter all year long or do you want to be a part time starter with the Yankees.

It makes no sense to pay $12 million for a part time player. That is full time money. It is not like he hits that well to be a full time DH and Arod will get time at third when he returns. The red sox dumped him for a reason and you do not see the white sox pushing to keep him.

while I agree its a massive amount of $ to pay him....it is only a 1 year deal. Also if/when arod comes back, youk could be the full time dh, spell alex at 3rd and spell tex at 1styouk- though he isn't what he was- still can hit, work the count and has more clutch in him than basically 90% of this team.

I suppose for one year it works. No doubt a RH bat is badly needed.

Well if the Indians don't get him, hopefully Lonnie Chisenhall takes the next step.

The Red Sox "dumped" (sic) Youkilis because: 1) they had an embarrassment of riches at 3rd base, 2) they are a business just like the Yankees, and 3) there was "drama" between Youk and Bobby V. On the third part, they got rid of the wrong player. But eventually Boston upper management got it right. It took an entire year for them to figure out that "discipline" wasn't the problem in Boston.

The biggest knock on Youk is conditioning. He has occasional low back problems, and Boston chose to rest him when it flaired up. They did that mostly because they could, having a very capable and future star Will Middlebrooks ready in the wings to get more experience. Meanwhile Youk's a fantastic fielder, has the flexibility to play either first or third, has good stats for pitches per at-bat, and plays with an overabundance of passion. And that ain't all bad, my friend.

I just don't understand what directions the Indians are going??? They are putting expensive band-aids on bullet wounds which sends a very negative message to their fan base.

Why not just explore trades for players like Asdrubal and Choo so you can get prospects back who you can build on? This team, as its built right now, is going nowhere! Why not just blow it up and start over? Do they really think that Dolan's image can get any worse???

Go to Cleveland. Yankees fans don't like you and don't want you.

Skankees'll punk out on this. Worried bout taxes too much. Youk'd do better in CLE w/ Terry anyways(Tribe won't.)

The kids were getting a LOT more time due to injuries and house cleaning. Youk'll stay in the AL Central or head to the NL.

Make no mistake. They truly dumped him. They got scrubs for him in return: both gone now. Take what was said about him in the media after he left with a grain of salt (cuz Boston has a habit of trashing players on the way out). However, if it is to be believed, he was a pill in the clubhouse both to teammates and the coaching staff. Tribe and Yanks beware: Forewarned is forearmed.
