11:56 AM ET 12.08 | The lockout is in its 84th day, and there will be no resolution, according to the players, without the union head Donald Fehr being part of the negotiations. There was optimism earlier this week to save the season when some owners met with a group of players without Fehr or other union staff members present. Shortly after those talks ended, however, the players told the owners that all future meetings must include union leadership. The owners told the players that bringing Fehr back "could be a deal breaker," according to Ron Hainsey, a Winnipeg defenseman. Players responded by ending the meetings early Thursday morning after an all-night session. "If they're unwilling to meet without our leadership, we've got a problem, because we literally cannot close the deal without them for a number of reasons, legal and otherwise," Hainsey said Friday. "It leads you to believe that you'll have a very difficult time reaching a deal at all."

What is it about Fehr that they don't like? His breath? His deodorant? The fact that he won't roll over and play dead for management?

Or his track record with negotiations while head of MLBPA

Definitely his BO. Smells like a skunk.

This is just like a really bad movie that you can't turn off and you can't leave the room. I love hockey, but my opinion of the NHL could not get any lower. A junior league trying to act all grown up. I'm embarrassed for the sport.

Getting rid of Fehr means we'll be stuck with the mighty "mini me" for eternity with lockout after lockout after lockout. The NHLPA has no choice but to keep him on at this point.

Players should have told the owners that the dwarf is a deal breaker too.

Sorry Ron, guess your just going to have to make due with the 4 million plus you made last year...

My thought exactly. This whole 'take our ball and go home if we can't be the star of the game' sh#t has thoroughly worn thin. Bettman and the owners are the ones acting like spoiled teenagers and the players are stuck as the kids without the ball.

Fehr is addressing an Auto Workers' Union in Ontario today...wouldn't happy to be taking place in Waterloo now would it?

December 8, 2012  02:02 PM ET

What is that line in Office Space? The boss comes up and says "We've noticed you've been missing work a lot lately."

And the guy replies "Actually, I'm not missing it."

Something like that.

Well you get my drift.

Once again I am finding there is a pretty decent life without hockey. Saw all of Band of Brothers, now into American Horror Story and Wilfred (Frodo is so limp). Near the end of book 3 of GOT, 4 is sitting there waiting and I hear 5 is now available. Great NFL season so far.

My cup runneth over.

Liked the original better than Asylum.

Enjoyed Ian McShane as Santa though...

If the owners refuse to bargain with Fehr, could the players file an unfair labor practice suit on the owners?

December 8, 2012  04:17 PM ET

Everyone participating in the negotaitions is a deal braker......this is never ever going to end....more rubbish each day.....

As Centre Ice said " embarrased for the sport"
Also embarraaaed to eb a fan of it.

Not sure I want to see either of them in tight fitting trunks.

I tend to side with the owners in sports labor disputes on general capitalist principles, but when you already have a fourth rate product then repetitively remove it from the marketplace so consumers can't consume it, I'm pretty sure that makes the owners totally incompetent businessmen.

Being from Minnesota, the love of hockey gets into your blood, and even I am ready to wash my hands of the NHL after this debacle. At this point, the NHL needs to blow it up and start over, or a rival league ala the old WHL needs to be created to replace it. 4 work stoppages during Bettman's tenure is ridiculous and unacceptable.

Neither do i, but it would be an interesting way to settle it........
