Shields: 'Definitely a sad day'

08:04 AM ET 12.10 | James Shields, who had spent his entire pro career in the Tampa Bay organization, will now pack his bags for Kansas City, thanks to a deal that landed the Rays Wil Myers. [Shields] is the team's all-time leader with 87 wins, 217 starts, 1,250 strikeouts and 1,454 2/3 innings. Shields had spoken openly about wanting to spend his entire career with the Rays, but with steady trade rumors over the past several seasons, he knew his time could be running out. "I thought I might be able to squeeze in one more year, but that was kind of being selfish," Shields said Sunday. "I'm excited to go over there, but this is definitely a sad day for me and my family. I've been here 12 years. We made this our second home, and we're definitely going to miss it."

Shields has 2 years left on his contract. And look out for Wade Davis. The knock on him as a starter was he was lousy in the first 2 innings. He got that sorted out last year, working out of the pen. I expect him to have a big year. The Royals are contenders now. Hopefully, Myers will be combine with Longo to give the Rays some punch.

If after 12 years there Tampa is his "second" home, then it is unlikely he will buy a home in KC. Some steaks for sure.

......need to adjust your vision....the royals have a very nice club that was coming on strong last year....good young talent....hated to see them give up their best prospect... would have been a bit more patient....wait one more year to go all in.....we will see what happens.

Odorizzi--they RH pitcher TB got in the trade--should contribute this year, and should be pretty good for years to come. TB does well at recognizing and developing pitching. I think they got back about as good as they gave, if Myers is at least a decent big-league slugger.
