Witness says Josh Brent left Jerry Brown to burn alive in car wreck

02:07 AM ET 12.11 | Two weekends in a row the NFL lost an active player to a tragic death under tragic circumstances. But just as details emerged late about the Jovan Belcher murder-suicide, chilling details of the car crash that killed Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown have surfaced and they're gruesome, infuriating and confusing all at the same time. Warning: if you're faint of heart don't read into the details, as the eye witness basically insinuates that Josh Brent left his best friend to burn alive in a wrecked car and has she not showed up, that would have been the final result of the accident. at this point, McWilliams was under the impression that it was a single car collision involving one person, and due to Brent's general calmness she didn't assume there was another person trapped in the wreckage. That was until she heard screams and pleas for help coming from with the car that was now becoming engulfed in flames. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, these screams were those of Jerry Brown. McWilliams said that she had to force Brent to drag Brown out of the car and once Brown was safe, Brent didn't stay by his dying friend's side and instead disappeared.

Her statements don't jibe with the arrest affidavit, which police released Monday. The cops said that when they arrived on the scene, Brent was pulling Jerry Brown out of the wreck, and that he was taken into custody at that time.

It makes no mention of some heroic woman bullying the 300+ pound Cowboy into doing anything, nor anything about him being absent from the scene. This appears to be just someone trying to get famous.

In another article on SI, it was written " Police received 911 calls from motorists who saw the upside-down vehicle but they did not immediately have any eyewitnesses to the wreck, the police spokesman said."

So if she was there when Brent pulled Brown out of the car, and she was there afterwards to notice him missing, why wasn't she there when the cops showed up and saw Brent pulling Brown out of the car?

I hope to God that this article is incorrect. This news would do NOTHING for the grieving families and would instead just worsen the mental images running through the minds of the involved families, particularly the Brown family.

In all likelihood, Brown was DOA. I have read several articles about the accident and none of them mention anything other than Brown being pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. If he had died in transit, or if he had died at the hospital, the reports would have probably indicated that instead.

I don't know why this woman would choose to lie about this, but what's even worse is that she would get press coverage in spite of all the evidence against her statements.

This is a horrible tragedy for all involved, but I think I'll wait for all of the facts to come out before I make any judgment on whether or not this woman is lying. I would suggest that you might want to do the same.

Wow...

Who leaves their "best friend" in the car while they take a squirt on the shoulder?? How wasted was this clown

A cowboy.

That's harsh. Most players on every team are fine. But, I'd imagine there are some like this on every team, too.

Remember, Brent was drunk and had just been in a violent accident. He may have had a concussion and didn't have a clue about what had just happened.

No excuses for what he did in the first place, though. None at all.

Really DD? I don't know about you, but I know that I have driven a few times when I shouldn't have. I was lucky and got away with it but you know it didn't have to go that way.

Agreed. I hope that this witness statement is untrue. But it's way too early to be sure.

Yeah, I've done the same, but I didn't end up upside-down in a burning car, so I can't speak to that.

But, I ended up with a concussion after taking a serious fall skiing, and even after the ski patrol woke me up it was a while before I figured out where I was. And I still don't remember the fall.

My point, though, is that we shouldn't expect the guy to have full "situational awareness" after an accident of that magnitude. He didn't seem to have a lot of awareness when he got into the car, either.

No argument there, having had my bell rung a couple of times I'm pretty sure that I couldn't have functioned properly for at least a little while

If he was wasted and concussed he might not have even remembered his friend was with him. It happens. Let time pass before deciding what actually happened.

I had a feeling this would end up on here as a thread... so I clipped this comment from the Dallas Morning News;

Brent???s attorney, George Milner, said the woman???s account is not consistent with what police told him. "That is absolutely false," Milner said. "What I???ve been told is that Jerry Brown was never conscious after the accident. " She better be careful with this one."

Let's let the facts come out.
