Rangers prefer Upton over Hamilton?

08:14 AM ET 12.11 | Over the past two weeks, the Rangers have been altered by significant departures, and this offseason may see further change. A rival executive, assessing the Texas Rangers on Monday, said, "They're going to overpay Hamilton or they're going to overpay 'KT.'" That's Hamilton as in free-agent outfielder Josh Hamilton. And that's "KT" as in Arizona general manager Kevin Towers, who is dangling right fielder Justin Upton, a hitter whom the Rangers covet maybe even more than Hamilton. The Rangers likely will end up with one or the other. They could even end up with both, and still add a bullpen piece, a starting pitcher and maybe free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Even free-agent right-hander Anibal Sanchez ... is on the Rangers' radar.

"And maybe they can get Juan Gonzales to come out of retirement to pinch hit! And they could get members of the 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates to join Ron Washington's staff! They would have lots in common..."

It is very simple you overpay Hamilton or trade for Upton and sign AJ and have money left to get an sub par pitcher. If I am Texas it is a easy choice you see Josh.

Wow, Fox was hyperventilating this morning. I'm sure the Rangers are talking to all those guys mentioned by Fox, but I doubt they intend to sign all of them. Exactly what they do depends on the players who are available. I suspect the holdup right now is Hamilton; when he decides what to do, they will know how much money they have to spend elsewhere.

Prefer him over Hamilton? Doubt it, seriously doubt it, just covering their bases.

If they do get Upton... that gives us a lineup full of right handed hitters...
I'm not sure that's a real good idea.

Why not go way back and include Frank Howard from the old Senators club.

Hamilton has helped them get to 2 world series in 3 years.... Show the guy some respect and pay him!!! Upton has been great on the field but not off the field he has been demanding a trade for 2 years! You know what your getting with Hamilton..... Lock him up for 3-4 years

You know, the Rangers could end up with both Hamilton and Upton, then deal Nelson Cruz and a couple others to fill the holes from the Upton trade.
Someone would overpay for Cruz.

the d'backs traded their top rookie pitcher bauer, and got some top hitters in that trade as well, after this trade the dback's wouldn't trade justin upton any more and about the rangers,,,well they were too soft over that trade all the winter meetings,,,

likely,,the rangers have to sign hamilton to a 5 years contract 20 millions per season, or let hamilton play some where else,,,about upton its too late to try to make any deal with the d'backs,,,

overpaying to a player its a easy thing to do, but its difficult to get top quality playing time in return, best options?? rangers sign hamilton under a few conditions play a 149 games per season
and hit as many homeruns plus drive 150 R,B,I.S, then we would likely pay you in full your contract,,,
