Joe Montana wanted to be traded to Steelers, not Chiefs

07:07 PM ET 12.11 | Joe Montana retired with the Kansas City Chiefs after becoming yet another legendary player to ride off into the sunset wearing a different uniform than the one he became famous in. But if there's one thing we love as sports fans, it's "what if" scenarios involving major transactions or events in sports history. What if the Blazers had drafted Michael Jordan, what if the Hornets had kept Kobe Bryant and not traded him, what if Barry Sanders had been drafted by another team? The latest, albeit not greatest but still interesting what if scenario involves Joe Montana and that infamous trade from the 49ers in 1993. How it happened was Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs who eventually went to the AFC Championship game under his command. But in a recent interview on Arrowhead Addict (via the Dan Patrick Show), Montana is quoted as saying he wanted to play for the Steelers and not the Chiefs.

Steelers were big into Neil O'donnel ... I doubt we'd have given up a 1 for Montana. Though maybe we should have, since Montana knocked us out of the playoffs.

I met Bubby, great fellow, down to earth guy. Neil O'Donnell (spit) vs Joe Montana local boy, I think the Steelers screwed the pooch on that one....

Neil O'Donnell took us to the AFC Championship game the following two years in a row, and the Super Bowl...and Montana retired shortly after his trade. Hard to say they made the wrongcall...and I believe O'Donnell had the best career TD to Int. ratio for a while when he was still in the league. Montana would have been very cool to have -- six years earlier.

Thanks, Joe. Just what Chiefs' fans needed to hear. Him & Dwight Howard (Nets), not the sharpest tacks in the box.

This story is BS. There is no way a class act like Joe wanted to be associated with "team steroid abuse".

Would have loved to see Barry play for another team, or in a two back set, we'd still be talking about how many rings he would have gotten.

He's just jealous that your team knows how to win big games, whereas his favorite team holds the record for the most Superbowl losses. I mean it's great to get to the big game, but it sucks when your team generally chokes when it gets there...

For what it's worth the rumor at the time was not that the Steelers didn't want Joe Cool but that the Steelers ran an offense Joe didn't like and the Chiefs did (West Coast) so Joe choose the Chiefs over the Steelers. But maybe that was all a smoke screen.
