Choo merely a rental for Reds

08:12 AM ET 12.12 | While both the Diamondbacks and Indians landed pieces they wanted, there's much to like about the Reds adding Shin-Soo Choo. Yes, [Choo] has played only 10 career games in center field. Yes, he is under contract for only one more season, and with Scott Boras as his representative, is likely to depart as a free agent. No matter. ... The Reds lost [Didi Gregorius], whom Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers compared to a young Derek Jeter ... but truth be told, many Reds officials like their incumbent, Zack Cozart, better. Heck, the Reds even got the Indians to kick in approximately $3.5 million to account for the salary differences in their end of the three-team trade -- Gregorius and center fielder Drew Stubbs for Choo and backup infielder Jason Donald.

I think the Reds will regret this trade. They are giving up too much for a one season rental of a guy who has played ten games in center. Look for the Reds ERA to go up

This appears to be a "win now" move for the Reds.

The Reds can go all in this year and try to win with Choo and if he does leave I don't think they really care because the all time base stealer in the minors is waiting in the wings.

What did they give up? Drew Stubbs? DiDi Gregourius? And the guy at Fox Sports who wrote this article is on some kind of hullucinate drug. Stubbs the strikeout king and DiDi the unproven rookie who in his starts in Cincy last year struggled.
Choo is an insurance policy for the Reds, If Billy Hamilton can not make the team or struggles in CF then Choo will be the man,and I'm sure the Reds have all intentions of starting Choo anyways and that way they can bring Hamilton along slower but Hamilton is the future.
DiDi would never be a starter in Cincinnati, Zack Cozart is the man it is no contest. They also have Tanner Rahier in the farms who they say is better then DiDi so its a wash between them 2, and besides Billy HYamilton was originally a SS in High School and College and was converted to a CF because of his speed.......The Fastest Man to step on a baseball field.

And plus Indians had to throw in some cash......there won't be no regrets, and after winning a championship next year Choo just might like that feeling of winning and want to stay
......something that didn't happen in Cleveland.

If you think the Dusty Baker led Reds willl win a WS you are kidding yourself

Not a big Baker fan myself but Walt Jocketty has put together a pretty good team that should win the division again next year and will go deeper in the playoffs - a WS maybe you just never know.......and today they signed Clevelands 3rd baseman Jack Hannahan to back up Todd Frazier.

choo has his own problem,,,scott boras wouldn't allow the player just to sign weak contract!!!

December 12, 2012  06:53 PM ET

I thought MLB wanted to ban the use of Choo?

Pray they they never have to use Jack!!!

wiseup: Hannahan and Donald vs Cairo and Valdez is a wash

December 13, 2012  02:52 AM ET

wiseup: The Reds and Jockerty realize Choo might be a 1year rental as jockerty would probably refuse to agree to a Boros idea of a fair deal. the Reds feel like Billy Hamilton will be major league ready in 2014 and will man CF. If Choo happens to help the Reds win World series and get a taste of winning, which he would never had gotten that chance in Cleveland, he might tell boras to work out something reasonable. But Reds should not hold their Breath. Boras and Choo will test market after 2013.

The market is down. If Bourn and Hamilton can't get a strong deal Choo won't. Might come back on a Ludwick type deal of course with a little more money. Ludwick knows he needs GABP. And if they bat him around Bruce and Votto that only helps as well. They'd rather have Ludwick beat them then one of those two.
