08:19 AM ET 12.12 | If the season is salvaged, credit will likely go to more moderate owners and players. With considerable push from both owners and players behind the scenes, the NHL and NHL Players' Association will be back at it Wednesday. The moderates on each side were working the phones all weekend long, sources told ESPN.com, pushing like crazy for both sides to resume talks, back-channelling between owners, agents and players stressing the need to get right back at it in an effort to once and for all end a lockout that should have never lasted this long. ... Among those working behind the scenes to try to get things back on track has been New York Rangers owner James Dolan and Pittsburgh Penguins owner Ron Burkle, sources said.

Why do they keep posting Dolan's picture up for the modicum of sane bargaining? Since when has he been moderate? Comatose maybe, but moderate? No.
Anyways, one still clings to the flimsy hope that a deal can be reached, I still sincerely doubt that cooler heads will prevail, and this will stretch and linger... a bit like the smell Bettman leaves whenever he comes into a room.

"If the season is salvaged, credit will likely go to more moderate owners and players."
This headline seems to be a parable of the national political scene: One wing pulling one way, the other wing pulling the other and the bird in the middle just keeps going in circles.

It's been a long time since either side mentioned the fans.... those forgotten loyalists who plunk down good money that in the end pays for this silliness

They almost got a deal done last week but Bettman and the hard core owners jumped in and pulled the plug. Nothing is going to happen until Jacobs lets it happen no matter what the reasonable owners say.

Gee maybe the owners and players di dnot get the Fan Memo - Many of us have moved on and no longer care if you play this year or not. In fact, I'd say this season is gone and would prefer you make your little deal for next season --- another shortened season is a disgrace.
And I hope the players demand in their new contract that there can bo NO LOCKOUTS in the future.

It's over, Bettman finally killed the NHL.. he will go down in history as being at the helm when the ship sunk. My guess is he will soon announce that he has taken another job and will jump ship because he is too much of a coward to go down with the ship.

He'll probably go back to to the NBA and sink that ship too within 2 years.
