The case against starting RGIII

08:01 AM ET 12.12 | The decision to start rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III may have to be taken out of his hands. This is a good indication of where Mike Shanahan's priorities really are in his dual-purpose job: Is the Washington Redskins coach/architect beholden to winning this week's game or the long-range future of the franchise? I believe it's the latter. It's why I think [RGIII] won't play Sunday against Cleveland in a game the Redskins desperately need to win. ... It's why the coach, acting in the best interests of the player and the club, should opt to rest his prized rookie, whose sprained ligaments in his right knee made him collapse on the field against Baltimore and was later diagnosed as a Grade 1 sprain of the lateral collateral ligament.

They are one game behind the Giants, but the Skins have the tiebreaker in division record. It's more than "just one game." They have a real chance to make the playoffs this year if the Giants fall to Atlanta.

Do you think RG III is risking a career altering injury if he plays like he is? If so, he should sit. The guy takes some serious shots.

With a healthy RGIII on the roster, the 'Skins will have plenty of shots at the playoffs down the road. Rest him.

That Giants/Falcons game this weekend has a certain element of importance to it, I would say.

Falcons = Texans?

A mobile, running QB should not play on injured legs, especially if the injury is to the knee. A simple cut could tear the ligaments. Play it safe and build for the long term. Besides, Cousins looked pretty good himself.

If Shanahan is the architect I am gonna live in a cave. Sit RG, let flap jaw shanahan play, he will get killed on the first play. Then put Cousins in to win the game.

The Falcons have clinched and are 2 games up for home field. It will be hard to judge their performance. They really don't need the game, but they risk losiing their edge if they go in not trying for a win.

I'm afraid RG-III risks a career-ending injury every time he takes a snap. I assume he's had an MRI and the doctors are in the loop on this.

The right move Sunday might be to start Cousins, but have RG-III active if things don't go well. It is the Browns, after all.

Oh, and Hail to the Redskins!

December 12, 2012  08:42 AM ET

Kyle Shanahan is the decision maker.... This is why he's paid the big bucks.

Whatever he decides, he has the power to do it, and the fans are okay with it.

RGII says he plays, He Plays!!!

December 12, 2012  09:14 AM ET

RGIII should only play if he looks sharp in practice.

If he is running or slowed a bit, then why risk long term injury for short term gain??

If he tore his ACL/MCL in the next game, you would not see him for another season.

The Browns are not an offensive threat, so the Skins should be able to win with Cousins.

You're probably right.

i understand it's a "any given sunday" league but the skins should not need RGIII to beat the browns. they need him healthy for the final two games that they will likely need him to win and be healthy as possible for a playoff berth. they have a punched ticket to the playoffs if they win out. brown, eagles and dallas is possible.

Beware the Browns...

That's right it is the Browns, after all, and they are not to be taken lightly.

Concur.

The part of the Browns you sort of almost have to fear is the part Griffin would be facing.

The defense.

It's pretty good.

Add to that Trent Richardson against the Redskins "average" defense...

This is as big of a trap game as there is this weekend.

Damn he'd look good as a Cowboy.
