08:15 AM ET 12.12 | With Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's chance having passed, how much longer will it be before another defensive candidate threatens to win the Heisman? Well, there might be a good chance a purely defensive player finally wins the Heisman next year. South Carolina sophomore defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was a dominant force this year, and because of the NFL's very unfair draft eligibility rule, he will be back for another season. He will have a lot of things going for him. Clowney plays a position which has a statistic (sacks) that is easy for voters to see and process. ... It will take a truly great season for a defensive player to win the Heisman. But, Clowney might just be the guy to do it.

The same writer who says that the NFL has an unfair draft eligibility rule is the same writer who will blast the NFL in articles about all the ex-players being broke.
By having the eligibility rule the way it is, (a) players have time to allow their bodies to mature to handle the beating they will get in the NFL and (b) hopefully they will get a degree so they can start a new career after the 6 or 8 years in the NFL.
Plus, on a selfish note, I like watching college football.

If he stays healthy then he should be next years Manti. He is really good.

IM0, he's a better football player than Manti......will be in the NFL, too.
As for a defensive guy winning the Heisman, I don't see it happening. This year was a perfect storm (d player from ND....national appeal, & favorite being a Freshman the old guard not wanting to give it to a Frosh) & it didn't happen....won't for a LONG time, if ever, IMHO

Agreed. This was as good a chance as a defensive guy could ask for. Clowney is definitely topnotch, but the system just won't play out his way.
They oughtta just go ahead and put the label "best offensive player" on the award, and stop all pretenses as it's laughable as things stand.

Yep. That's so true. I do believe that Manti will have a similar impact to that of Von Miller. IMO.

"...and because of the NFL's very unfair draft eligibility rule ..."
The article lost all credibility with that statement.

If Clowney is getting Heisman hype then they need to give the same to UTk's Antonio Richardson, who kept Clowney in check the entire game, made him look very average.
But the day that an OT wins the Heisman will be the day that the world implodes upon itself.

It doesn't matter who gets the early hype. It only matters who gets hyped during the last 4 games of the season.

Manti is a lot like Demeco Ryans, I heard, which means he'll play for many years and be very good, but won't be necessarily a superstar.

It was very cool. BTW, Richardson didn't even get a mention on the AAT. :-(

If he can control his false start tendency, that kid will be a very high draft pick. He protects Bray's blindside very well.

And that is the shame of it all...
IMHO I thought CK was deserving this year for his entire body of work, not just ONE GAME near the end of the season
