Vikings taking ball from Ponder's hands

08:01 AM ET 12.13 | Adrian Peterson's somewhat remarkable quest for 2,000 yards dovetails with the Vikings relying less on their would-be quarterback of the future. Now, the Vikings are 7-6 and coming off a win over the Chicago Bears in which they relied on Ponder as little as they have all season. He tied his season low with 17 pass attempts and posted his third game with fewer than 100 passing yards. The Vikings ran the ball a season-high 68 percent of the time, giving [Peterson] the most carries of his career -- 31. But Ponder and coach Leslie Frazier contend the quarterback can continue to develop even as he's being asked to throw the ball less. ... He has rushed for 1,600 yards through 13 games, has an outside shot at Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record.

What works: Adrian Peterson
What doesn't work: Christian Ponder
Go with what works. It's not rocket science.

I guess using AD more keeps the Vikes away from those 3rd and long passing downs.

I agree. He can't play any worse than Ponder has.

And besides, giving him a chance to break Dickerson's record also keeps him in the running for MVP. It's probably the only honor the Vikings will get this year, but I'd like to see it.

Still might be a bit tough for the Vikes. Can you break it down a little simpler for them?

I know that it's going to go to Manning, but the Comeback Player of the Year should be Peterson's. Less than a year removed from tearing his knee to hell, he has looked like the best running back in football. He's taking hits to his knee and making cuts on every play. It's amazing.

It's unlikely to happen given the way the selection is made, but really, both of these guys deserve it. If ever there was a situation for awarding it to two guys, this is it.

I see that, and I understand that Manning's bird-neck is exposed on every play, but Peterson takes hits to his knees and cuts on every play, too, and he didn't take a year-and-a-half off. I do agree that both players are very deserving, and maybe (probably) it's because I'm a Viking fan, but Peterson playing the way that he has is more impressive to me.

I'd rather see Kevin Kolb, Brady Quinn, Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow start at quarterback. Is that better?

Maybe I don't know much about football, but I'm pretty sure Adrian Peterson is the Viking who keeps taking the ball from Ponder's hands.

I don't think AD is likely to break Dickerson's record, but I do think he's the MVP, regardless.
Peyton should be Comeback Player of the Year.

If the Vikings had lost the Christmas Eve game last year in Washington how would RG111 look in a purple uniform. Cutler gave the Vikes the game last Sunday with one of his picks ran back for a td and another ran back to the 5 yard line.

If that had happened I'd say that would put the NFC North as arguably the strongest division in football at that position. Cutler and Stafford are inconsistent but either one can carry their team when they're on. Brady will probably get MVP and Manning Comeback POY. Peterson should get one of those but as the talking heads remind us weekly, it's a QB driven league.
