Ravens' firing alters Broncos' plans

08:03 AM ET 12.13 | In the eyes of many, diminutive Ray Rice ranks as the biggest reason the Ravens fired Cam Cameron. [Rice has had] four games with 13 or fewer carries this season and had three games in 2011 when he didn't have 10 carries in a game. So [Jim Caldwell] is expected to put the ball into Rice's hands more this week. People around the NFL believe that and the Broncos certainly believe that. "Oh definitely I think they're going to look to use Ray Rice more," is how safety Jim Leonhard put it. "He's a difficult match-up because of all the things he can do." Rice will stress the Broncos linebackers and safeties plenty in pass coverage and he continues to trouble defenses in the running game.

Why didn't they use him when he was on the field ? All passing game ?

The Broncos still plan to win, and I still think they will.
Like it or not, replacing your OC with 3 games to go isn't a good thing for a winning team.

Makes no sense. Besides calling a bad game what could he have done to deserve getting launched now?

Replacing your OC with someone who has never called the plays during a game before is an even worse thing.

The only reason that makes sense to me is that they were getting rid of Cam anyway, and by doing it now it gave them a chance to hire Caldwell before anyone else got to him.

Maybe Cam's insistence on passing the ball is what helped open up holes for Rice. It will be interesting if he can shoulder the load like A.P..

Cameron and Flacco didn't mesh well. Caldwell has a much better relationship with the QB, and the thinking is he'll call plays with more of an eye to what Flacco is comfortable with and does well. And, of course, Rice needs to be much more of a factor in the game plan.

But can the Raven defense stop Peyton from lighting them up....Broncos get ahead quick ..the game then gets shifted to Joe Flacco...which is exactly what the Broncos want...

That's pretty much how I'd predict the game will go. Advantage - Denver.

Denver has been more of a second half team this year. They're not getting off to fast starts.
It's very possible Baltimore can get Rice going early and play keep-away from Peyton while actually puttting some points on the board. I could see it going either way. We could have a good game on our hands.

When a guy of Caldwell's pedigree is hired as QB coach , the writing was on the wall that someone was on borrowed time.

Over the course of the past two seasons Ray Rice would be rendered invisible by Cam Cameron for long stretches and since he's the most talented offensive player they have, that's worth firing Cam based on that alone. I think most people would agree he's one the top 5-7 RB's in the league in terms of talent, yet he ranks 12th in carries. That's just bad play calling.
Also consider Cam and Flacco didnt mesh very well, it's easy to see why they made the move now. Before firing Cam they weren't likely to be a team that goes beyond winning one playoff game. Maybe this gives them some better continuity on offense and consistency, if it doesn't they aren't any worse off.
