Red Sox sweetening deal for Dempster

08:09 AM ET 12.13 | After taking another shot at him, Boston may be on the verge of adding an arm in free-agent Ryan Dempster. Dempster, 35, who has pitched for the Marlins, Reds, Cubs, and Rangers, had a rough go of it in Texas last season after he was traded by the Cubs. The Red Sox need a starting pitcher, though, so they have targeted Dempster as the best fit and most affordable. They also are exploring Edwin Jackson, Anibal Sanchez, Shaun Marcum, and others. ... Dempster turned down a two-year, $25 million deal from the Red Sox last week with Milwaukee and Kansas City also in pursuit, but the Red Sox revisited the talks and upped the ante to the Canadian-born righthander. Two general managers believe the Red Sox may have a good shot at landing him.

Yikes! Dempster to the Red Sox!! The other GM's in the AL East are cowering... and in the distance a dog barks.

Probably the best all around pitcher that is still out there and which the article didn't mention is former Card number 26.

There must be something in the air in St. Louis. I don't know if its the coaching, the atmosphere, the water. Players seem to flourish there.

After bombing out in all the big games for Texas that gives him just the upper hand he needs for getting all the years and money that he wants. Figures. That's MLB.

December 13, 2012  09:07 AM ET

This goes right along with Cherington's philosophy of finding players out there with "a few hickeys" who can be rehabilitated and made functional.

Seems all you have to do to get his attention is artfully screw the pooch in your contract year.

They did , the Mets asked for Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. End of conversation.

December 13, 2012  09:15 AM ET

They would be better off going with Franklin Morales as the 5th starter. Dempster just plain sucks.
