08:21 AM ET 12.13 | To what extent is Donald Fehr willing to cut a deal? Most around the game still believe a season will be salvaged. But here's what keeps some on the NHL side up at night, and I wonder if it keeps some players up too. Let's call it the Scenario That Keeps People Up at Night: Basically, it goes like this: Donald Fehr maybe doesn't want a deal, maybe has no intention of doing a deal for this year. "We think he probably has a clause where he can't be fired by the PA, or if he does, he gets a gigantic balloon payment. So, what's the downside for him for a season being cancelled?" said [a league exec]. ... "Either way, he still gets his money. He still gets to keep his reputation as the baddest [man] in labor negotiations and the sport dies."

The sport won't die in my neighbourhood, but it has no business even being in a few others around North America.

Clever!
Although you might not think it, when the 'Canes moved to Raleigh (well Greensboro initially) , there was already a pretty good youth thing going, with them here now, that's gone from strength to strength, lockout or not.

Toronto gets the last laugh though -- they make the most money and is home to the HOF. On a serious note, I hope Toronto mgmt pulls their heads out of their -- $$$ and becomes competitive again.

So its Fehr's fault now is it? It takes two to make an impasse. I think Bettman is also intent on sinking the season just to be able to say that he stood up to Fehr. This is the same playground attitude that is going on in the US Congress now.

My biggest problem with Fehr is he wont take a vote among the players for specific proposals by the NHL. I guarantee right now if the players voted for the NHL's current proposal it would pass and we would be playing right now. What Fehr does (like most unions) is put pressure on players so they keep sillent because they don't want to look like they are 'crossing the picket line.'
Now my problem with Bettman is he was able to pass a rule by the owners in 1993 that he only needs 8 votes to pass or reject any union proposal. So essentially 22 owners have no say in this CBA discussion and 8 owners (7 owners and the NHL owns the Coyotes) are going to decide whether we have a season or not.

Will have been part of more cancelled games than 9 franchises have played regular season games
Has cancelled 10.2% of all regular season games (1 in 9.8)
Has cancelled 16.9% of all regular season games (1 in 5.9)
