08:13 AM ET 12.14 | A new Big East? Marquette's new basketball-centric athletic conference will include 10 or 12 teams, have a reasonable television contract and possible rotating sites for its league tournament, according to university sources. The Golden Eagles will join six other former members of the Big East: Georgetown, St. John's, Providence, DePaul, Seton Hall and Villanova. Butler and Xavier could leave the Atlantic 10 to join the new unnamed league. ... If the Big East Conference dissolves, the new league would consider adopting the Big East name. ... With the addition of Butler, which has made two of the past three Final Fours, there is a possibility that the first league tournament could be played at Indianapolis' Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Big East basketball tournament in Madison Square Garden was always a must-see event because of the teams and the talent on display. It will never be the same IMO.

Cheating Dukies:
The lawsuit brought against the former Duke basketball player, Lance Thomas, by jeweler Rafaello & Co., will never go to trial. How very convenient for Coach K and Puke basketball.
Except it really isn't convenient at all. Not if Puke still wants to be what it bills itself to be and Coach K still wants to be who he says he is.
Honest. Playing by the rules. A cut above the dirty, conniving mainstream.
The settlement reached between Rafaello & Co. and Thomas, who allegedly failed to finish paying off nearly $100,000 in jewelry purchased while still playing college basketball, ostensibly gives both parties NCAA cover. Nobody on either side is likely to be compelled to cooperate with the joint investigations by Duke and NCAA Enforcement into how then-senior Thomas paid 30 grand for bling in 2009, with nearly $68,000 more in credit. Especially since a confidentiality agreement was part of the settlement.
Nobody with a functioning brain needs a formal investigation to tell us that this deal smells funny. Like so many other things that just seem to happen in college sports, it doesn't pass the smell test.
But this is choir boy Mike and Dukie bball. It must be clean.
Go ahead Doc stick your head back up your fairy tale ass and pretend away that all is pure in Puke land.
12-0 deal with it…

Their on the right track, but it won't be just 8 teams. You can almost automatically throw in Dayton and St. Louis (maybe Evansville and Creighton, too). You could even conceivably add Notre Dame, since they want to keep their football program independant. ESPN was reporting that it could be as many as 21 schools, but that's too many for one conference. There are plenty of good-to-great private schools with strong (non-football) athletics programs in the Midwest and Northeast. It would be one heck of a gauntlet to run through for a season, though.
