01:59 PM ET 12.14 | The Memphis Grizzlies have made a surprising move, hiring ESPN stathead John Hollinger to their front office. Hollinger will become the Grizzlies' vice president of basketball operations and report directly under general manager and team president Chris Wallace. The hiring of Hollinger continues the recent trend of organizations bringing in quantitative analysts to their front offices, though few have risen from being a media member to a high-level basketball operations position as quickly as Hollinger.

The Grizzlies are unorthodox in their hiring but perhaps that is a good thing. Most teams tend to re-cycle executives and coaches. The old boy network is alive and well in the National Basketball Association.
