03:55 PM ET 12.14 | The Detroit Tigers were given an opportunity by one of their free agents that the Texas Rangers weren't given by Josh Hamilton. On Thursday, reports surfaced that the Chicago Cubs had all but signed free agent right-hander Anibal Sanchez to a five-year, $75 million contract. Instead of the deal getting done, however, Sanchez gave his former club, the Tigers, a final chance to match Chicago's offer. Though the Cubs eventually bumped their offer to $77.5 million, it ultimately wasn't enough to get Sanchez out of Motown, who agreed to a new five-year, $80 million deal. Sanchez's task is now to live up to the massive contract he was given and not make the Tigers sorry they gave him gobs of money to play supporting actor to Justin Verlander's leading man.

Anibal Sanchez is worth $80 million. You overpaid, Tigers.

Overpay. But, every other free agent has been overpaid thus far.

Most are saying John Hamilton has received what people said he would. Greinke was not really a surprise. However, Sanchez receiving this sum means the market is beyond thin.

Blame the owners. They set the market.

$16 mil per year for Anibal Sanchez is insane.

I was expecting Greinke to get a $100 mil contract but I was a little suprised to see $150 mil and the AAV nearing $25 mil. Like you said, it's a reflection of the thin pitching market.

I think the Greinke contract will be so bad that the Dodgers willl wish for the good 'ol Darren Dreifort days.

R.A. Dickey is probably pulling his hair out when he sees what pitchers are receiving this off season.

Mabey this year he can actually pitch 200 innings for the very first time

The Cubs and Rangers both are having bad off season free agents signings and no trades to help their team in 13 so far.

I'd say the Cubs dodged a bullet with this one, not having to pay Sanchez money like that.

Sanchez needs better PR...all his pics on Fn make him look deformed.

Amazing dollars for a guy whose career record is under .500. Yeah, I know, he had all those years with the Marlins. But, still, just amazing.

The odds are gettign slimmer and slimmer that the Cardinals will be able to extend Wainwright. He's worth 28 million a year if Greinke is worth 24.5 and Sanchez is worth 16 million per year.

You may be right but if I was Wainwright, I would have to seriously consider staying in St Louis even if I had to give up a few $$$. It's a great place to play.

Actually, I do not think it matters. If Wainwright leaves, the Cards will pick up some retread who will turn into an All Star. Something must be in the St Louis water.

Based on his 2009-10 seasons, yes. Coming off his surgery? No. Last year he was merely decent. It is not a lock he will improve drastically, even though theoretically he could
