Anibal Sanchez re-signs with Tigers

03:55 PM ET 12.14 | The Detroit Tigers were given an opportunity by one of their free agents that the Texas Rangers weren't given by Josh Hamilton. On Thursday, reports surfaced that the Chicago Cubs had all but signed free agent right-hander Anibal Sanchez to a five-year, $75 million contract. Instead of the deal getting done, however, Sanchez gave his former club, the Tigers, a final chance to match Chicago's offer. Though the Cubs eventually bumped their offer to $77.5 million, it ultimately wasn't enough to get Sanchez out of Motown, who agreed to a new five-year, $80 million deal. Sanchez's task is now to live up to the massive contract he was given and not make the Tigers sorry they gave him gobs of money to play supporting actor to Justin Verlander's leading man.

Most are saying John Hamilton has received what people said he would. Greinke was not really a surprise. However, Sanchez receiving this sum means the market is beyond thin.

I was expecting Greinke to get a $100 mil contract but I was a little suprised to see $150 mil and the AAV nearing $25 mil. Like you said, it's a reflection of the thin pitching market.
I think the Greinke contract will be so bad that the Dodgers willl wish for the good 'ol Darren Dreifort days.

The odds are gettign slimmer and slimmer that the Cardinals will be able to extend Wainwright. He's worth 28 million a year if Greinke is worth 24.5 and Sanchez is worth 16 million per year.
