09:43 AM ET 12.16 | Cognizant that there have been too many false starts and false reports, the Sixers expect that on Thursday, some seven months after Andrew Bynum last played a game in the NBA, they will finally know whether or not the 7-footer is actually on the road to recovery. Bynum will unquestionably play for the Sixers this season, I'm told by a very reliable source. And even if he plays just 30 games for them and never again - he's an unrestricted free agent this summer - the Sixers will come out of this deal with a brighter future than if they had never initiated the talks with Orlando that originally targeted Dwight Howard and got the ball rolling on the massive, 12-player, four-team trade of last August.

how does him leaving as a FA and getting nothing back help them?

I know, weird. The article almost sounds like they are saying they are better off without him. Hmmm.

I hope he comes back and plays well. As centers go in the NBA, they are becoming very rare.

The way of the Dodo bird. Seems like such a thankless position. Run down the court, take a beating on the offensive end, run back down the court, take a beating on the defensive end. Wash, rinse, repeat. Tough to stay healthy.

Absolutely helps them by not making a dumb investment in something that is obviously broken.

Addition by Subtraction.
