Ridley shoulders blame for Pats' loss

"We played a good football team and you can???t beat a good football team playing like we did today, all the way around starting with myself," Ridley said. "You can???t have balls on the ground." ... Ridley had just 23 yards rushing on nine carries on the night. He lost a crucial third-quarter fumble and was on the field for just one snap the rest of the way. He has three fumbles in the last two games. "No one is harder on myself than me," Ridley said. "Nobody is more upset when I fumble than Stevan is. For me I just have to keep working. There is lot of football left to be played."

I guess they didn't think they'd get the ball back if they punted. Questionable play call. Belichick needed to get some sleep...so he bailed.

I wasn't too surprised. I actually expected it.
He took a similar gamble on a 4th-and-2 from his own 28-yard line with 2:08 to go against the Indianapolis Colts in 2009.
I believe it's actually the correct call to make.
With 2:28 left on the clock and only two timeouts left, San Fran only needs one or two first downs to run out the clock. If New England punts there is a realistic possibility that they don't even get the ball back. Meanwhile they have the #1 ranked offense in the NFL, had moment heavily weighing in their favor, and only needed two yards to go.
