11:06 AM ET 12.17 | Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is nearing NFL history. Peterson ran for 212 yards and a touchdown against the Rams, bringing his season total to 1,812 yards and two games remaining. That's only 188 yards shy of 2,000 and 293 yards shy of Eric Dickerson's NFL record. That's a lot of yards, but Peterson has run for over 150 yards in six of his last eight games. His total over the last eight games of 1,313 yards is the most any running back has ever had in a span that long in a single season. Remember that Peterson had only one 100-yard game over his first five games while easing back in after ACL surgery.

Given they're final two games, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get the record and carry his team into the playoffs. This guy is a once in a generation runner. Very different running style than Barry Sanders but just as unique. He's one of those elite athletes that we should enjoy watching, even if we're rooting against the Vikings (which I am).

He's as impressive a pure runner as there has been. He has a very rare combination of size, speed, power and athleticism.

What's amazing is he is the Vikings' only real offensive threat. Other teams plan their defense around stopping him, and he still goes for 200 yards.

Percy is pretty explosive when healthy. Actually, they are missing a true, big-bodied #1 type of receiver, but they have a decent mix of tight ends and receivers, they just don't have a quarterback.

The Texans and the Packers won't lay down like the Lions and the Lambs. (A little Biblical humor there.)
If the Vikes are down a couple of scores, it will be tempting for them to abandon the run in the second half. There are a bunch of teams in the NFC with wild card chances.
So, what do they do, let AD get the yards, or open it up and hope to make the playoffs?
On the other hand, the best thing for the Vikings to do is admit that they don't have a passing game and just hand off to Peterson no matter what the score is.

Although you're correct about them abandoning the run, Ponder isn't going to bring them back from a deficit. They're much better off hoping Peterson breaks one than they are hoping Ponder can complete a pass down the field.
