Team Canada courting goalie controversy

08:06 AM ET 12.17 | There is, of course, a little time to settle things -- but not much. [The] internal goaltending competition is underway. Malcolm Subban of the Belleville Bulls and Jordan Binnington of the Owen Sound Attack will try to prove during Canada's pre-competition camp in Finland next week that they deserve to be Canada's starter at the world junior hockey championships in Ufa, Russia. Canadian head coach Steve Spott revealed Saturday that Jake Paterson of the Saginaw Spirit will be his alternate goaltender. This year's team has taken the unusual step of bringing a third goaltender for insurance against injury and because of the travel distance to south-central Russia.

Ye Gods! Hadn't thought of that! :-(

crazy that Subban and Binnington went to high school together and played association hockey together. The extra little push of competition must have really helped both kids. If it helped get them to where they are now, then I don't see why it would suddenly be a problem.

I think the only reason that it's not clear is because Subban was very average in the intra-squad games. It's a short tournament with little room for error, so although overall Subban might be better, you need to ride the guy that'll stay hot for a few weeks.

I've thought about whether or not I'm gonig to be up at 4am through my holidays...I'm not super keen on it, but then there's the fact that the replays are in the afternoon and I really don't want to get the scores before watching, so I think the compromise is PVR, wake up and watch SANS commercials.
