Is Mike Piazza headed to Cooperstown?

05:03 AM ET 12.18 | This is a crazy year for Baseball Writers of America Association voters for the Hall. The first-timers on the ballot include Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa. None of them ever served a suspension for taking performance-enhancing drugs, but considerable smoke has surrounded their careers and others have said that they did. The ballot is also cluttered with Rafael Palmeiro, who was suspended, and Mark McGwire, who later admitted taking the banned substances. Many voters have indicated they are torn about what to do. Many others have indicated they won't vote for any player who in their minds is in any way tainted. It takes a 75 percent approval rating among the 600 or so voters to be elected to the Hall, so just what will happen when the polls close Dec. 31 is a mystery. But one of the many questions facing baseball writers is whether or not Mike Piazza is worthy of a bust in Cooperstown.

IF he took steroids?lol...You mean WHEN. Try the Mexican League in 1991 and probably earlier than that and then onward for many years. He's a great example of a guy who would have probably been a career Double or Triple A player but the juice helped him with his strength, confidence and ability to bounce back. It's a shame because he seemed like a great guy and was always great to us Mets fans but I heard stories about him for years. He's probably in the Mitchell report by the way.

The report has been out for 5 years. Not that hard to look up who all is in it. Piazza is not.

Me too. Especially into the Phillies division. He's a local so I always pulled for him. But it was alot harder to root for him in a Met's uni.

I like the way you think. It was kind of an odd turn of events as I remember it. Wasn't he a Marlin for like 3 days between Dodgers and Mets? Granted the Marlins are still a division foe, but would have been much less inner conflict if he had just stayed there.

I'd forgotten about that. Yeah, upon checking, he actually played 5 games for the Marlins before going to the Mets. At my age, even all these years after Curt Flood, it is still hard to grasp the business end of all the player movement.

He was also a good defensive catcher. When he caught for the Dodgers, LA lead the league in staff ERA (Mets were 3rd I think); when he moved to NY, NY lead the league. The crap about "not throwing runners out" is because the Mets teach their pitchers not to worry about the men on base, but to concentrate on getting the batter out. This is the correct approach, but it puts a lot of strain on the catcher--and the Mets proceeded to hint that the stolen bases were exclusively the catcher's fault. It was actually the result of an organizational decision, and they just decided to make the catcher the scapegoat.
I think he deserves hall of fame--and yes, so does Yogi!

Piazza had a lifetime .242 BA in the postseason... not that impressive.. Bench was a lifetime .266 in postseason... and Piazza is considered a much better hitter???
also he only threw out 23% of runners attempting to steal... MLB average was 31% during the years Piazza played... for comparison.. Bench threw out an amazing 43% of all runners trying to steal on him
