08:26 AM ET 12.18 | While the Kontinental Hockey League is on its holiday break, Joffrey Lupul has returned from Russia -- likely for good. Because the Toronto Maple Leafs forward's heart lies in North America, he says he will not be returning to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, cellar dwellers of the KHL. ... [During a Monday radio interview, said Lupul:] "I won't be going back. I thought about it a little bit. I felt bad leaving the team." In nine games with Automobilist, Lupul scored one goal, assisted on three others, and was a minus-6 for the struggling club. "I wanted to play somewhere, that opportunity came, I went. It was probably a little more difficult than I thought, with the language barrier and living in a new country. It was a little worse than I bargained for."

um....maybe this is in the equation somewhere? I can't imagine they are stomping around the offices of Automobilist hoping he changes his mind

Ha, stop using logic. Once the game starts again in a few years we will have the Russian bashers out in full force.

To all those who actually think the KHL is viable competition or that a Euro league could supplant the NHL..............
I know I would never want to live there for 8 months a year. And these guys will not either.

Like I said, I have always kept that in mind.
But it's worse going the other direction.
Most Euros have actually had English in school. Mario never even spoke English when he went to Pitt as a rookie. Count on the fact these NA NHL guys were never in French Immersion let alone taking Swedish or Slovak, etc.
NHL players are not suave sophisticates.

That part ... he's completely comfortable. The part that was tough was yelling, "Set me up in front of the net so I can pad my stats" in Russian.
