08:06 AM ET 12.18 | Having Nick Saban back in Miami will lead to a host of inevitable questions, some of which he answered during a Monday radio interview. [Saban] spoke publicly for the first time about one of the more controversial moves of his 2005-06 Dolphin tenure. Of course it's the Daunte Culpepper versus Drew Brees situation following the 9-7 season in 2005. Things didn't go so well with Culpepper while Brees went on to win a Super Bowl in New Orleans. "We thought Drew Brees was an outstanding player and that's who we made the first offer to," Saban said. "Quite frankly, you know, he didn't pass the physical with our organization so we had to go in another direction and there was nothing any of us could do about that."

Curious how much the team physical is really worth. I think they use as an excuse to void a trade if there is a real issue, but ignore if they really want the player. Could be that Brees failed the physical in NO as well, but they didn't care. I doubt Payton Manning passed his physical at the time he signed with Denver.

"I"m NOT going to be the Alabama coach"....Nick Saban, two weeks before he left the Miami Dolphins for Alabama. And we believe him about Brees flunking the physical? Don't think so.

That's my thought on Saban, as well. Zero credibility.

I think you are absolutely right... across the board. They kept who they wanted to keep and that was Culpepper.
Decisions like that set teams back years.

I always thought that the decision not to sign Brees was because he wanted more money than the Fish were willing to pay.

In which case... you get what you pay for and Saban is still lying.

Brees signed with the Saints as the bargain of the century, something like 6 years $60M. If the Fish weren't willing to pay that, they deserve to stay a third-class franchise.

No, it makes you think why Saban is even bringing it up 7 years later??? This is a non story.Saban failed in the NFL, now it's time to get his Bama team ready for the NCG.

College football coaches are on a par with politicians, lawyers, and used car salesmen when it comes to integrity. When Saban bails out of Alabama the sports books will be setting the over/under on NCAA sanctions shortly thereafter.

Agreed, although I'm sure it was the typical media-day type of question that coaches and players have to endure.

Saban is why college coaches going to the NFL is such a risky prospect. Forget Brees, Saban's drafts set the Fins back like 5 or six years so all this chatter of Chip Kelly "going" pro is a joke, you can't acquire talent in the NFL by handing a bag a cash to someone.
