Danko fuels speculation Butler will bolt

08:18 AM ET 12.18 | And now for something completely different. We like to lambaste public officials for releasing statements that we claim say absolutely nothing. So it was with reaction to Monday's statement by James Danko, president of Butler University. Au contraire. Considering the position he is in, Danko was lucid and revealing. It doesn't take much reading between the lines to deduce that Butler is ready and willing to leave the Atlantic 10 and join an as-yet-unnamed new basketball conference. Danko said Butler has "controlled its destiny proactively," citing the recent move to leave the Horizon League for the Atlantic 10. There was no denial of interest in a proposed league. Otherwise, why release a statement at all?

I heard that Butler has to convert before receiving an invite. ;-)

Seriously, if the "Catholic 7" want to establish an identity, why not stick with Catholic schools? St. Louis, Dayton, Xavier, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure all are Catholic schools. Heck, if they wanted the Detroit market, UDM (that's University of Detroit-Mercy) would be a possibility.

There very well maybe a serious war of influence between the so-called 'Catholic 7' + what they gain [steal] from other conferences and the A10. Butler would be the biggest prize to pluck from the A10. Villanova will not want another Philly school involved. I also think the idea of being too 'Catholic' will not help. Creighton is rumored. If UConn or Cincinnati would go Independent in football they could be possibilities. A lot of flux going on and I wouldn't be surprised if CBS, Fox or NBC wouldn't throw a lot of money for this product being now developed. CBSSports & NBCSports both need additional programming.
