08:21 AM ET 12.18 | Though neither is expected to play in USC's New Year's Eve bowl game, eyes are nonetheless on Max Wittek and Cody Kessler. Coach Lane Kiffin said he expects [Matt Barkley] to play in the Sun Bowl, but said Barkley won't practice until the team arrives in El Paso on Dec. 26.That would give Barkley five practices, at most, to get ready for game action after more than a month off. ... USC is treating these non-Barkley practices as a spring preview. Wittek and Kessler, both redshirt freshmen, shared reps with the first-team linemen and receivers in practice Saturday and will do so throughout the next couple weeks. The competition will be open in the spring, with Wittek and Kessler likely to be joined by highly touted recruit Max Browne.
