Will Detroit make Cabrera a Tiger for life?

08:08 AM ET 12.19 | Alex Avila wasn't ready to say for sure where Miguel Cabrera ranks among the greatest Tigers in history, but he would say Cabrera was the kind of player "where you're retiring his number on the wall and making a statue." That could depend, however, whether Cabrera finishes his career with the Tigers. Interestingly, general manager Dave Dombrowski said recently that's a distinct possibility. "I think it's a realistic situation," Dombrowski said last week. ... [Cabrera] probably staring at one more massive contract, perhaps worth more than the $254 million deal Albert Pujols got from the Angels last winter. And it won't really be clear for a while whether the Tigers will be able to afford such a contract.

Be careful Detroit, he will be 32 years old when his current deal expires, and he doesn't have the body type that tends to let him play into his 40's at the level he currently plays at.
Not to mention like Josh Hamiltin, he has his own demons to deal with.

Unlike Hamilton Cabrera hasn't had any missteps (at least that have been made public) since his spring training eve DUI in Feb. 2011 and if he has had an re-lapse it sure hasn't effected him on the field as 2011 and 2012 have been his best two seasons in the bigs.
I would also disagree about the body type argument. He doesn't rely on his speed, ala a Carl Crawford or Jose Reyes, he relies on his intellect and tremendous god given ability to hit. They did a story on him last season about how he sets up a pitcher into thinking he can't get to a certain pitch so he can bait the pitcher into throwing that pitch in his next at bat. He's a great complete hitter, not just a power hitter and not just a singles hitter. With Detroit he can slide to the DH role when needed. To keep him, they will probably have to pay into his late 30's or to even 40 when his production will definitely decline to a certain degree, but he's been tremendously durable in his career to date, in his 9 seasons as a full time starter he's averaged 158 games per season.

Who goes into the DH role first? Cabrera or Prince?

Prince.... Cabrera lost a lot of weight to move to 3rd. Prince hasn't done squat to address his weight problems.

the tigers shouldn't sign him for any more long terms, a two years deal and 5 years at most should make sense, but ten years??that would be very much dumb,,,

cabrera has always been a heavy guy, and boras its adding extra cost in any clause and contract,,means whoever sign cabrera the price would be more stiff than the current number!!

Didn't he play for the Marlins? He could never be a Tiger for life since he wore the fish's uniform already. Maybe they meant for the rest of his playing life.

wise up: some player play in ball parks that gives players inflated numbers Rh hitters in Fen way, lh hitters in Yankee Stadium, players in Philly, Colorado , and Cincy. What Cabrea does in Detroit , one of the fair parks in ML is awesome. Some of the hrs he has hit their could have gone out of yellowstone park. As long he can avoid the dl which he has done so far and continues to produce cabrera will stay in detroit. unlike some players where it is hr or nothing. carera also hits for average as well.
