'Drop-dead' date coming from Bettman

08:20 AM ET 12.19 | According to Bill Daly -- publicly, anyway -- NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr is biding his time to see if he can get the players' best deal with the regular season truly hanging in the balance. But Daly also admitted a meeting wouldn't solve much because the NHL isn't going to go any further than the offer tabled two weeks ago in New York as the massive losses continue to mount for both sides. ... Whether the league is going to give Fehr a deadline is up in the air. There has been talk Bettman is getting ready to give Fehr a "drop-dead" date to save a 48-game schedule in the near future. It may be required to get back to the table. NHL officials believe Fehr has told the players to be patient and the NHL will bend.

This lockout is not like 2005, where that was all about the whole philosophical structure of the league, and it wasn't about either side meeting in the middle and settling the problems. This lockout is all about finding a middle ground (10 year CBA or 8 year CBA? 5 year max contracts or 7 year max contracts?), so the only way you can settle this thing is for Bettman to make a drop dead date and then both sides will come up with some agreement at the 11th hour. Everyone is posturing right now because they don't want to give just alittle bit hoping the other side will blink, and drop dead date will force both sides to get serious and stop **** around.

My question is, will Bettman drop dead on this date as well?
Oh well, most avid followers of the sport have gotten their fare elsewhere this season anyways, so at this point most of us have settled in and forgotten what we would be watching from the NHL, and gone on with our lives. The season has been pretty much cancelled for the majority of us since September anyways.

Look on the bright side. This is the end of Bettman.
Once the season is officially cancelled I will not be surprised to see the owner's resolve finally give in.
