Olympic decision to be tabled?

08:21 AM ET 12.19 | The lockout may not see the inside of a courtroom, but the standoff is aimed in that direction. So what will come first? Another bargaining session or a showdown in court? It's a big game of chicken. In the meantime, there's been very little talk of the Olympics. That's remained on the back burner until the bigger core issues are resolved. But one source told ESPN.com Tuesday that it's not written in stone the players and owners must make the Olympics part of the next CBA, that there exists the possibility -- if both sides are willing to do it -- to have a side agreement on the Olympics once further talks with the IIHF and IOC are held. My guess is NHL players are headed to Sochi, Russia, but that's no guarantee.

If i'm an owner, I don't want my players at the Olympics. I've said it before, i'll say it 1000 times more.
I always think back to 2006, and Dominic Hasek going down for the rest of the season. I'm convinced the Senators would have won the Cup that year (and I would've been furious, but not the point here) had he stayed healthy. Things like that should not be happening in a tournament in which the NHL receives zero dollars from.
Now, here's where the sneaky business lies: How much more is NBC's contract with the NHL worth if the league lets its players go to the Olympics? You think that deal had a few million more in it based on the assumption players will be going to Sochi, and the NHL is simply withholding that from the players in order to use it as leverage? Or am I giving the weasel a little too much credit here?

Interesting point. Who knows though.
Once the season get's cancelled in a week or so the players will be free to do what ever they want.

I agree, but we know it's all about making more money for the network...NBC in this case. The Olympics are always better with amateurs in all sports

I agree. Leave the O-lame-picks where they belong: In the hands of amateurs.

Fair point, but as with anything in this life, the Almighty Dollar might have the last say. If NBC ponied up more dosh, you'd think a few of the players might hit the International ice.
Roamer has the right of it though, isn't the Olympics meant to showcase Amateur talent?

The problem has always been defining "amateur"

Right...cuz Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis, etc were amateurs.

That won't be happening anytime soon either as all the v-ball, b-ball, soccer players, etc all play in pro leagues...

Guys who earn a flat out official ridiculous salary to play their sport and have organized pension plans and such are pros.

Minor leagues. Minor wages. Essentially training wages.
Soccer players are under 23.

Only when Canada couldn't beat the old Soviets and US couldn't win with college hoops players anymore.
All the hockey players play each other anyway now.
And a lot of foreign hoops leagues exist.

And we never bothered with Limpics in hockey, we created our own series to play those guys. And they were much better than any Limpic love fest.

Sorry H, but they are allowed over-agers on the team. And some of the 23 year olds and under make more cash than most NHL players...

This thread was bound to get a strong showing from Hank. If they're not pros they're not worth watching, unless it's the lympics, then they shouldn't be there.
Am I still following? ;-)

Chicharito, Neymar, both under 23, both superstars in the lympic tournament, plus I think its 3 over age players per squad.

The Summit Series was much better than any Olympics involving the pros. The excitement of watching the 1980 US squad can't be equalled when the pros are involved.

Its a no-brainer to have the NHL players in the Oly's...best on best...if your player gets injured in the tourney..its just too damn bad...not only that, the players themselves wanan be there but im sure Bettman and Co will try to use that as a bargaining chip.
