Dodgers and Red Sox interested in Pirates closer

08:09 AM ET 12.20 | The Dodgers may be showing interest in Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan, but they have some company. The Red Sox are said to have an interest as well. The Dodgers are a potential match because they have more starting pitchers than anyone -- veterans Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang are available. While the Pirates aim to add a starting pitcher, a Red Sox package might instead feature multiple players, including a young pitcher. Pittsburgh needs one starting pitcher, as it expects to find a fourth starter internally from a list that includes veteran James McDonald, who started strong last year but tailed off in the second half. Sources suggest the Dodgers are considering a variety of relievers, and could also make a play for [Chris Perez or Bobby Parnell] instead.

Apparently, the Pirates do not envision that there will be much need to close games in 2013.

They already signed plan B (last year's set up man who can also close games) to a contact earlier this year in case (for when) they trade the Hammer.

Yeah, but he was there.Personally, I think the Sox should look at Soriano to close. Much better option than Hanrahan, IMO.

I don't think they want to spend that kind of money.

The Dodgers should also have Ted Lily available now that they have signed the Korean lefty, although they might want to keep Lily around until they see how the new guy fares against major league pitching. But if you want to trade...

LA has a closer in the kid they got from the Mariners (who got him from Toronto), Brandon League. If they really want another arm in the BP, though, they would probably rather trade one of their old starters for a young arm...
