08:28 AM ET 12.20 | Say what you will about the rink in Graz, Austria, temporary home for Sam Gagner, Tyler Myers and Andrew Cogliano these days, but it does rock -- traveling, though, can be tough. All told, Cogliano and Gagner [recently] travelled 18 hours in one day for one game. "It really does humble you," says Cogliano. "I know when I go back I won't be taking much for granted. I can see myself playing even harder now (in the NHL) and make sure I'm fighting for my job every game because we have it really good back home. We do things in the NHL that guys here wouldn't even imagine." ... Although Gagner and Cogliano admit the level of competition in the Eishockey Liga isn't the highest, they both say it's a competitive, skilled league.

I'm curious... did these guys really think prior to going to Europe that the conditions were going to be on par with the NHL? If everything there was as it is in the NHL, why would players flock here from Europe in the first place?

An 18 hr road trip in a country the size of Austria? I suppose an avalanche or two must have gotten in the way.

I don't even think the Anschluss took 18 hours

I'm not making fun of the KHL plane crash last year - but I'd rather take a bus in Austria then a plane in Russia. Stories of lack of unkeep is a little scary. I wonder if the crash did play a part in guys playing in Switzerland or Austria?

I didn't even realize he played for the Ducks last season!

December 20, 2012  09:53 AM ET

The team probably sings Climb Every Mountain while on the bus.

Maybe Cogliano is playing in Australia not Austria.

Shouldn't he be doing this every game??? The grass isn't always greener and goes to show how much these guys are coddled!!!

18 hours ? Were they pushing the bus ?

Or maybe the team was singing " the wheels on the bus go round, round, round....."

I think most players understood this. A few of the dimmer ones, probably not. It doesn't sound like this guy is complaining, just pointing out some of the differences playing in Austria.

It just said "travelled" Harry. I'm thinking they walked.

at the same time they only play 2 games per week, on average.

Finally....somebody gained some insight from being "over there".
