Little interest in ex-Cane Coker

Fourteen months after his firing, former Miami coach Larry Coker said he is ''surprised'' and ''a little disappointed'' he hasn't drawn more interest for vacant head coaching jobs. He interviewed for only one recently -- SMU, which hired Hawaii's June Jones. ''There are people getting jobs who haven't had the success I've had,'' said Coker, who was 60-15 in six years as UM's coach. 'I'm at the point where I don't need to prove myself. I don't have to coach again, but I'm not burned out. My health is good. I don't feel old. Joe Paterno said to me, `You need to be in college coaching.' ''

Well the success he had at Miami was with Butch Davis's players

Just like Les Miles - Saban huh?
Bull !
Whoever COACHED them is their coach.
53-9 in 5 seasons?
What will shannon's record be?
Oh, but thats coker's fault right?
How many more years? 5 ?

the success he had was with butch davis' players LSUbest, if you look at the recruiting once coker became head coach it went on an exponential curve downward and the program is still suffering from this bad recruiting job...and if you look at shannon's 2 recruiting classes you can see that he is improving recruiting as a head coach so i wouldn't say 5 years but give a year or two and miami will be back on top, possibly this year.

He did do it with Butch's players, and when he started playing his the noticeable talent in Miami dropped. That's what Randy Shannon could blame it on, anyway.

Coker could get another job but he's going to have to start small. He needs to prove that HE could succeed on his own in a smaller level. Maybe a 1-AA gig.

I agree Hova. The crypt keeper has to start from scratch.

Miami football doesn't really have a 'clean' rep and he's paying the price for not controlling his thugs.

January 27, 2008  07:19 PM ET

i dont think its fair to say its his fault miami players get in trouble...i mean it is so much to do in miami that almost any young male would find some sort of trouble in miami...he was a good coach and the record speaks for itself...1 nc and 2 nc game appearances.

January 27, 2008  10:50 PM ET

I don't know why he's so surprised, I don't think he fit the profile of any of the "big" names open this year - then you have your usual collection of the lower tier programs; and the way he talks, I'm not sure that's what he wants. He's a great coach, and should let the right program come to him (and it will if it's meant to be)... statements like this make you seem somewhat desperate to some, or trying to force this issue.

January 28, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Coker is a nice guy, but when you leave a job the way he was forced to do, that causes other programs to lose interest. I would have to question his recruiting ability to rebuild or build a team. Under his guidiance, Miami lost ground as it once was considered one of the best programs, but with a bad reputation for thugs.

Miami needs a stable coach and great recruiter like Jimmie Johnson to return. I do not think Randy Shannon will do the job either.

January 28, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Coker may need to step back a bit, maybe a WAC school that is not on the level of a Boise State or possibly a lower tier BCS conference team. Such as a Duke, Vanderbilt, Washington State, Michigan State, Baylor, etc...

January 28, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Looks like its a long drop from the top. Coker may have to settle for a position that is lower than he's accustomed too. Things don't look quite the same when a Head Coach is asked to leave vs. a HC voluntarily leaving to go to another program. And the opportunities are even more scarce when you came from the SEC.

January 29, 2008  12:40 AM ET

But is was Coker who recruited the likes of Portis, Davenport, Andre Johnson, Shockey, Winslow II, to just name a few....so therefore yes it was Butch Davis players but Davis wasn't soley behind the whole makeup of the Championship team

January 29, 2008  01:47 AM ET

He doesn't have to coach or he doesn't want to.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
He amy not get paid by the U if he gets another job and is willing to sit it out until his contract would have expired.
I'll bet he finds a job once his Miami contract stops paying him.
By the way, Shannon is horrible. His players drag him around by the hair like a Beotch.
He has totally lost control of the program.

are you serious party pimp, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about and are speaking directly out of your **** becuase that is about the complete opposite of what is happening.

Hogshow67:

Agreed, this guy was fired and they are not paying him big dollars to leave.

I think the guy is a nice guy and I do agree he needs to start at a smaller school and prove himself. There should be Lots of smaller schools looking for a guy like him. Maybe Southern Miss should have looked at him instead of this no name guy they hired from Tulsa. Coker can at least recruit the State of Florida and that is a big plus to any school.
