Reconstruction project on Chicago's horizon

08:02 AM ET 12.21 | In the course of a month, the Bears' fortunes certainly have turned. The big-picture stuff going on in Lake Forest is juicier than it has been in years. To my delight, that's not going to change for many weeks. Who coaches the Bears in 2013 is a much more meaningful, more layered conversation than if Lovie Smith's secondary can handle Larry Fitzgerald on Sunday better than it did James Jones in the loss to the Packers. We wonder aloud if Phil Emery has more muscle than previous general managers. We try to connect the dots on what type of coach Emery will tab if Smith is jettisoned in January. ... The anticipation of change can be both unnerving and exhilarating. Give and take about the prospect of a reconstruction project is engaging.

If the Bears do fire Lovie, they will do what they've always done: hire an assistant coach (likely a defensive coordinator) who's never been a HC before. They tend to be willing to work for much less $$$$$.

Reconstruction projects take time. And things are usually a mess until they're finished. Is that really something to look forward to?

The Bears could easily win the last couple of games, make the playoffs, and run the table to the Super Bowl.
Or, they may finish 8-8...

They're 8-6 and still in the playoff hunt yet there is talk of rebuilding. There are 17 teams in the league that would trade positions with them.

It,s time....9 years of the "same ole story" is enough...one lucky Super Bowl appearance and 8 years of wondering "what the hell are you thinking Lovie....yet don't expect a BIG name replacement....see you in the playoffs sometime in 2017....2018

I hope it doesn't turn out like the new Soldiers Field.

Be careful or these will look like the good old days. The Bears have a lot of good things in place. They are not that far away from being the best team in that division. Not far at all.

This.
The only problem is that Lovie and his GM can't seem to recognize what the missing pieces are.

Yeah, like an offensive line, for a start.

There was a big difference last week when a future Hall of Famer was throwing the ball instead of a unknown this week in Arizona.

Unkown? Who's unknown?
Anyone?
Well, when I realize that I don't even know who you're calling unknown, it sort of adds some validity to your hypothesis.

It may end up being a better strategy, when the alternative is a college coach or a failed retread like Norv Turner.

I respect all of your comments, but do you really believe that? The defense really has overachieved and is getting older (they'll especially miss Urlacher's speed in the Tampa 2). And the obvious - the o-line needs an overhaul - and they did not acquire even one in the draft or free agency - Cutler may not survive the time it takes to do that. As a Bears fan I hope you're right, but I have my doubts.

Yup, they already have their sanchize QB and a number one WR for him to stare down on every pass play. "Gee, I wonder where the ball is going?". ;-)
