Cowboys TE on the verge of history

08:04 AM ET 12.21 | Nearly seven weeks after one significant franchise mark, Jason Witten has another NFL record in his sights. The tight end passed Michael Irvin for the most receptions in Cowboys history in early November. On Sunday against New Orleans, or in the regular-season finale against Washington, Witten should set the NFL record for most receptions by a tight end in a season. With 97 catches, Witten is five shy of the record set by Tony Gonzalez in 2004. "I have so much respect for the game and this position," Witten said. ... "To break that, no question, it's special. But I think you're more proud of the body of work over the course of the 10 years than you are just one season."

Outstanding football player. Wish he could get a Super Bowl before he's done. Might not happen.

True. B J Dupree & Jay Novacek come to mind immediately, but I think Whitten is the best they've ever had. Definitely Romo's security blanket.

Don't forget how the season started. After the spleen incident, Witten, started really slow and dropped a ton of passes. You could tell his body wasn't ready after the injury. He worked his way through it and now here he is about to have a 100+ reception season. Quite an impressive show of work ethic. Great player.

The Cowboys don't have a lot of receivers worth covering, so that makes Witten's accomplishments all the more impressive. I like it even more because he's not a showboat or a diva, just a regular guy who goes out there and does his job every Sunday.
