08:50 AM ET 12.22 | While the Yankees scour the free-agent and trade markets for a right-handed hitting outfielder, Raul Ibanez could be moving closer to leaving The Bronx. According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Mariners have "serious interest" in signing the 40-year-old free agent designated hitter and outfielder. The Rangers and Phillies also are thinking about adding Ibanez's productive bat and professional attitude to their clubhouses. The Yankees have been talking to Ibanez's agent, but it has been general talk and not negotiations.

Why would Seattle need him? Montero, Smoak, Jaso and Kendrys have 1B, C and DH filled, and Ibanez isn't much in the OF.
They'd be better going with speed (Bourn), maybe as a modern version of the mid-'80s Cardinals with Vince Coleman, Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark.

one year deal at most, no need to add too much pressure to the outfielder,,

Raul did a great job PH for Yanks and he would be missed, but if he can get more money and longer term with M's take the money and run. At 40 years old cant be to many options out there. Yanks can always find someone who can PH, DH and play a little OF.

I'm thinking they want a clubhouse presence and PH and occasional DH

Clubhouse presence? Overrated. They need offense, plain and simple.
That's why the Angels' signing of Hamilton was a trifecta: it added to the Angels' offense and drawing power in LA; it took Hamilton away from the Angels' main competition, the Rangers; and it kept the Mariners from getting the one guy who could have made a difference in Seattle.
Seattle needs offense of some kind. Bourn would help. So would Swisher. Hell, maybe they should look at luring Vince Coleman out of retirement, but they need something or someone to spark that lineup.

Just pulling in the fences should add some spark.

This is just another example of why the Mariners are a bad team wanting to sign an ageless wonder instead of a younger Bourn.

Hell, no. Bad idea. Move them out more. Get speedy-ass OFs and use speed.
