Tee Martin's trying to keep Robert Woods at USC

So...just a question. If TM persuades Woods to stay one more year....and he gets hurt or has a very bad year because of QB/OL play and loses out on millions...will TM or U$C pay the difference?

Insurance.

Not many offensive impact players are projected in the 1st round of the 2013 draft.

Good point, but something tell me that Woods, even how good of a college player he is, just won't have that much of a impact on the NFL. Just my opinion.

You really are a jackhole sometimes.

Damn if T-Martin can convince Woods to stay at USC with Lee and if (big if) the Trojans can shore up their denfense just a little, then they might just win the 12 PAC South in 2013!!!

I gotta disagree with you on this one OT. While I don't think he's a WR1, he has some of the best hands I have ever seen. He could definitely make a difference for many teams. Works his tail off, runs good routs, and shows up to play even when hurt. Would love to see Martin convince him, but I just don't see it happening.

Yeah I'm sure he will declare for the NFL after the Sun Bowl. You are much closer to USC than I am.

I don't see many dominant WR1's in the NFL, and I see plenty of lackluster play at WR2's & 3's. Plus it takes a couple of years of development to really make an impact. If his work ethic is as you speak he will do well.

And ... I hope he stays at USC.

I hope they ALL stay.

No...my point was if a coach tried to persuade a player to stay, and they got hurt, where would the coaches responsibility lie? Insurance is good, but would it cover, say, 5-10 yrs of multi-million dollar contract?

And not trying to be a Jackhole Ice, just asking a question....or is that now not allowed by some posters as well?

I think without a scholly offer from a renowned program his chance to get 5-10 yrs of multimillion contracts goes down quite a bit. That being said I don't think the coaches owe him anything he doesn't work for except good advice and positive reinforcement. But who knows if he'll get better next year with a first year QB.

OK...a premier player for a renown program is a Junior....has a very successful year and has the opportunity to go pro....he already has a scholly and all that.

Now....one of his coaches tries, and succeeds, in convincing him to stay in school for his Senior year and forego the draft for one year. OK...he gets insurance, but does that cover the possibility of a very successful pro career...10-12 years as a WR with multiple multi-million dollar contracts....and if, during that Senior year he gets hurt and can't play....or his stock is diminished significantly..does he have recourse on that coach/school?

This wasn't pointed directly at SoCal, just happened to be the player in the article...

I hear what you're sayin D2, and I don't know much about player insurance but I do know his career could of ended last year or the year before, injuries are obviously random and a crap shoot, but I think if he got injured that bad next year he would probably still get his shot in the league given his skill set. But I still don't think its on the coach whether he wanted the kid to come back to play or get his degree.

I agree Jada...but the article is about the coach trying to get him to stay rather than turn pro...and these are still impressionable kids that still listen to their coaches (agree/disagree?). In that context, while it is still the kids decision, it could still be argued that the coach had some influence.

I think impressionable kids don't always listen to their coaches. (see agents) I don't know what Lane Kiffen's intentions are..(see agents) I wish the best for him.

Ok, so first thing is this, sorry for coming down on you. Thought you were taking a shot at us (again). Questions are always welcomed. So let me address your actual question...

When a player gets evaluated for Draft status, that determines how much Ins he is allowed to take out on himself. It's a pretty detailed document, and one of the documented points in it is, that you are not allowed to sue the school, any coaches, or the ncaa if you actually do get hurt, and collect on the Ins.
