Ex-Lion intentionally missed block to get Scott Mitchell hurt

07:23 AM ET 12.23 | Former Lions offensive tackle and current ESPN analyst Lomas Brown made a startling confession in a radio interview on Friday: Brown said that he once purposely missed a block because he wanted the man he was supposed to block, Packers defensive end Sean Jones, to injure Lions quarterback Scott Mitchell. In an interview on ESPN Radio, Brown said that in a 1994 game, he purposely whiffed on Jones so that Jones could get a clean shot on Mitchell. Sure enough, Brown got his intended result, as Mitchell was knocked out of the game. "We were playing Green Bay in Milwaukee," Brown said. "We were getting beat, 24-3, at that time and he just stunk up the place. He's throwing interceptions, just everything. So I looked at Kevin Glover, our All-Pro center and I said, "Glove, that is it." I said, "I'm getting him out the game." . . . So I got the gator arms on the guy at the last minute, he got around me, he hit Scott Mitchell, he did something to his finger . . . and he came out the game. [Lions backup quarterback] Dave Krieg came in the game." Host Ryen Russillo expressed shock that Brown would admit such a thing, but Brown showed no remorse. "As you can tell, I'm just not a big fan of Scott Mitchell. He's just not on my Christmas list. He won't be getting any Christmas presents from me this year," Brown said.

Well, it's a Lions thread, but not the one I expected... congrats to Megatron for breaking Jerry Rice's single-season receiving-yards record.

I know lots of people are going to bring up the fact that Mitchell was known for being a real jerk but this is still a really low thing for Brown to do.

Well, he told the truth and if anyone thinks this type of thing has not happened in the past, then they are being naive. Take away the football stuff and it is a game played by men and it is mans basic nature to do whatever it takes. Look up fragging sometime and you will understand.

Exactly. What Lomas Brown did was nothing compared to what has been done in the past and is happening right now. Football is not golf. If you can get away with something to gain an advantage and the ref doesn't call it it's OK. In fact, it's taught by coaches.

There are some guys injured in games that at least one of their team mates are cheering about inside. Brown just related one incident about himself. Not smart to do for his sake, but not that unusual.
How many times a day does some guy in the workplace set up someone else to get fired? Happens all the time.

I don't care if Scott Mitchell was Hitler reincarnated, he should have been able to count on his teammates. I don't care if it's common or not, I think this guy is a POS for trying to get his own QB hurt, and I think anyone else who does such a thing should get out of the league before they get someone hurt permanently. But I've never been fond of the "oh it's not like this isn't common" argument. A lot of things we put people in 6 foot cells to rot for are common, too, but that doesn't make it okay. If I were Mitchell I'd be looking for this fu*ker with a baseball bat, and it wouldn't just be his finger I'd **** up.

I understand what your saying but you have to know the whole story. May be just may be Mitchell was ratting out teammates to coaches telling them who was smoking what, breaking curfew, saying bad things about the coaches ect. So if Lomas thought Mitchell was going to get him fired or suspended he did a preemptive strike.

Brown is doing a bunch of radio because he wants to get into politics, John Boehner is doing something like that to the American people. He is ignoring his responsibilities to the American people and is going to allow the country to go over the fiscal cliff and take out all the progress this country has made in the last 4 years.
I don't think Brown will run for president of the NFLPA any time soon.

Not if Lomas was doing this on pass plays only. The QB would not have the ball long enough if he were just handing it off to Sanders. Remember, the OT knows the plays being called (he IS in the huddle). Letting a defender go by during a passing play is when the QB would be in danger, not if the call is to hand the ball off to Sanders.
