Yankees ownership making things tough for GM

07:55 AM ET 12.23 | In this offseason, by far the most challenging of his general managership, it does not appear as if Brian Cashman is going to find a right-handed power-hitting outfielder or a proven veteran catcher under his Christmas tree come Tuesday morning. The Yankee general manager continues to put on his best "what me worry" face while pointing out that spring training is still more than six weeks away. And that last year, it should be remembered, he didn't get down to his important offseason work until mid-January. Nevertheless, shackled by ownership's restriction to sign players to one-year contracts (thus likely putting Scott Hairston the remaining viable free agent outfield candidate now that Cody Ross signed a three-year deal with Arizona), along with a farm system devoid of any blue chip position prospects above A ball, Cashman is going to have a hard time filling his needs.

The over payments to a lot of their players now are coming back and slapping them in the face. No more money to spend, drained their farm system, and the Yanks could be looking like a version of the AL West A's.

That is part of the issue, and your point is well made. Good luck to the Angels and Dodgers for all their high spending. My gut however tells me that these purchases won't lead them to the promised land, and they'll have buyer's remorse later on.
The other half of the coin is that the Yankees made some long-term bad investments of their own for shorter term gain. It got them *some* return. But now the bad phase of those deals is starting to rear its ugly head. They are where the Angels and Dodgers will be in a year or two.
The rules have changed, and it doesn't pay to have too high a payroll. The big market teams will need time to adjust.

I still wish the Red Sox had brought back Cody Ross in lieu of signing Gomes and Victorino.

there really is no one out there that warrants big money. the 2 that were, hamilton and grienke are head cases and could be a lot of trouble to teams. might have to trade some young guys or bring them up and live with it.

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Indians' pitch to bring Nick Swisher "home" worked.
Two people familiar with the negotiations said Swisher has agreed to a $56 million, four-year contract with the Indians, who used the free agent outfielder's deep Ohio connections to convince him to join the club.
