Alex Smith perfect fit for Jets quarterback?

08:37 AM ET 12.23 | Alex Smith will be the New York Jets' starting quarterback next season. I got that information either from my Mayan swimsuit calendar or from a factory-second Chinese fortune cookie, I forget which. But it's solid info. The Jets are desperate. They gave Mark Sanchez a big contract extension last season, then traded for Tim Tebow, hoping he would light a fire under Sanchez's rear end. That must have been quite a meeting. "What the hell can we do to get our overpaid quarterback interested in quarterbacking?" It didn't work. If you seek to inspire the San Francisco Philharmonic to a higher level, you don't try to scare ???em by bringing in a hot kazoo player. Now the Jets are desperately seeking an actual quarterback, and Smith probably will be on the market. Why would Smith sign on to the insanity of New York and Rex Ryan? To escape the insanity of San Francisco and Jim Harbaugh.

I stand corrected. All my life I have believed it was better to make a mistake than do nothing, But this ?

This is a two way street. Smith will count $9.75 million against the cap to the 49ers next season if they keep him. A lot for a back up QB, same as cost of Sanchez for the Jets.

If I'm Alex Smith, I have my agent talk to a lot of other teams first before I even consider the Jets. That would be trading one form of insanity for another.

I told a buddy that the 49ers should make this trade the other day...just to say something ridiculous. If Alex Smith agrees to such a trade knowing the circus that the Jets are he deserves to be there. Would be a big step up for Sanchez.

Agreed.

The J-E-T-S will likely get a new GM at least. Maybe they get rid of Rex Ryan, or maybe they just say eff it and fire Rex and go into rebuild-mode. It doesn't seem like Woody Johnson's team is going to be at the top of anyone's wish list for a while

I don't want to jinx the game today, but if I'm the GM of the Ravens, I would think very seriously about going after Smith, especially with Flacco playing so poorly this year. I don't see the Ravens going anywhere in the playoffs with Flacco at QB (now watch him have a career day against the Giants).

Alex Smith deserves better than this.

I like Alex Smith. Hopefully he lands with a team that cares more about football than media. Now if they dumped Ryan and hired a guy like Cowher to build a real football team then you`re on to something.

I agree, Willie. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Happy Holidays to you as well. How's life out in the sticks?

I wonder what would happen if the entire Jets team retired or requested a trade

Not Downtown, more mid city part of Los Angeles.

That's awful. There's no good way to go.

Wouldn't this depend on who the new Jets GM is?
