10:11 PM ET 12.23 | Veteran guard Derek Fisher suffered a knee injury last week and is taking time away from the game. Fisher asked the Dallas Mavericks to be released and the team granted his wishes. "In Tuesday's game against Philadelphia, I suffered an injury to my patellar tendon. The recovery time will be approximately two weeks," Fisher said in a statement released Saturday night. "With this news and the difficulty I have been having being away from my family, I have asked the organization to waive me so I can return home. (Mavericks owner) Mark Cuban has been extremely supportive and has granted me this request. I cannot say enough good things about this organization. From Mark, to Coach (Rick) Carlisle, to the players on the Mavericks' team, I sincerely thank them for the opportunity. I have made decisions in the past, leaving money and opportunity on the table, and I will need to do that again. My family is my priority and that is where I choose to be. I won't close the possibility that I will play again, however for now my family and being close to them remains the priority."

I'm a fan of Fisher.... But w/ all the contracts and endorsements, he couldnt move his family to Dallas.... I'm a bit skeptical of his motives.... Fisher is clearly the bread-winner, just surprised his family didnt support him enough to not go to Dallas.... Or, or is it b/c Dallas isnt all that great this year and he wanted out....??

Fish used another BS excuse to get out of Utah conract about his daughters ailment to go to OKC

Get your facts straight. When Fish was in Utah, his daughter had a medical issue. There were TWO hospitals that specialized in her condition, one was in LA, the other in NY (I think). Don't slam the guy for wanting to be a family man first. It's better than 80% of the guys in the league.

Since Blake is still injured Fish can be signed by the Lakers at the minimum.

It's been pretty well documented since he first entered the league, Fisher is from Little Rock Arkansas, even went to University of Arkansas at Little Rock. That's a lot more country than Dallas.

Fish isnt a fool, he see that the Mavs are going to be a losing team so he bouncing. Just like he did in Utah!!

Good guy Cuba for being reasonable, but when are you gonna leave eX-Lakers alone?

Hmmm... Me wonders how Pau Gasol would fit in with my Mavs now that Dirk is back. Incidentally I'm still bothered 'bout Lamar Odom's stint here with my Mavs and can't help but wish him nothing but loads of failure with whatever team he lands with.
