Hanrahan trade signals message from Red Sox

08:14 AM ET 12.25 | As the offseason dawned, the Red Sox appeared, after a dispiriting 2012 season, reluctant to go all-in on win-now moves. Thus, if the team was to make deals involving key prospects, the Sox front office planned to target players who would be under the team's control for multiple seasons. ... [The not-et-finalized agreement] with the Pirates to acquire closer Joel Hanrahan, at least at first glance, appears to be a somewhat fascinating departure from that model. ... If this was a trade foremost about landing Hanrahan, then it came with a message: The Sox believe that they have a legitimate chance at contending in 2013, something that they're demonstrating with actions rather than platitudes. Hanrahan is as much a win-now acquisition as one can concoct.

Or else it is a sign that the Sox have soured on Bailey a little.

I never liked Bailey from the start. I much prefer a power closer. This is a great pickup, considering they gave up no top prospects to get him.

I agree - solid move by the Sox and they gave up very little. It looks like this is also a salary dump by Pittsburgh since Hanrahan is about to enter his final year of arbitration and stands to get a big raise from the $4.1 mil he earned last year.

i'm surprised a team like the Tigers or Angels who need a closer didn't jump on the chance to land this guy.

the team got a a very good pick up in this player, ever since they lose their regular closer to the phillies the red sox couldn't match any pitcher to close games,,,,

Sox are still at least one starter away from being a legit playoff contender.

...yeah, you get my point.
Lester-Buchholz-Dempster is okay, and may thrive under Farrell, and Doubront could end up being okay, but Lackey sucks, and there is little depth past those guys.

No sorry, Alacran, best policy is right: Lackey sucks and the Red Sox are stuck with him.

It looks like the bullpen will be the strength of the Red Sox pitching staff in 2013.
