08:29 AM ET 12.26 | On Tuesday, Hockey Canada named Malcolm Subban as its starting goaltender at the IIHF World Junior Championship, which opened Wednesday for Canada with a 9-3 win. [Owen Sound] Attack goalie Jordan Binnington will back him up. Subban, the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban, is a six-foot-two, 201-pound native of Toronto. He was in net for Canada in this year's summer series against the Russians, going 2-0 in the four-game set. He's got a sparkling 2.17 goals-against average and .932 save percentage with the [Belleville Bulls] this year with a 15-7-3 record. The 19-year-old stopped 19 shots in Canada's 3-2 exhibition loss to Finland Thursday. Saginaw Spirit netminder Jake Paterson is the team's alternate goalie.

Be nice to see how he looks in the NHL.

If there is an NHL.

It's gone from anger to apathy, nobody I know cares anymore. If corporations don't renew their "give away" season tickets which make up most of the league revenue, the NHL is dead. The average fan won't pay hundreds of dollars for a seat in the rafters and overpriced bad beer.

There will be an NHL, just probably not this year.

Either way Subban is a couple years away from vying for a job in Boston so I guess we'll just have to see how he does in this Junior Tourney.

I think you're right on. I had season tix (which I personally paid for) for 26 years in Washington. Friends of mine who have had them for 38 years now tell me they are dropping them next year. The idiocy of BOTH sides is mind-numbing. Bettman does the bidding of a core of give-no-quarter, share-no-revenue nitwits who haven't wanted change since the crank starter was eliminated on autos. Fehr has to prove how tough he is every 23 minutes. Phooey on 'em all. As I've said before I'm enjoying AHL hockey, scholastic hockey.............and it doesn't cost me a fortune.

"Bruins prospect earns WJC post"

Prestigious? I don't get it. Why is this prestigious? I suppose, in the minds of the CBC, any Bruins prospect who earns a spot in the WJC is .... prestigious, whereas a Leafs or Habs prospect is an automatic shoe in for the job. No prestige necessary.

Like his brother, he'd look a few shades darker than 99% of the players he'd be playing with and against in the NHL. A very visible member of a very small minority. Hockey, more than all the other major sports, is still a white man's game. Change's been way too slow in coming.

Subban is inconsistent at best. He had one of the worst camps on record he is unable to make the most easier save. He should have been one of the cuts for Team Canada!

SUBBAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If a players got skill he's gonna make it in the Show..doesnt matter what color he is.

It's funny that they're arguing about a few million in the grande scheme of $3.3 billion.

By the time they come back, there will only be a few million to go around. And I shall laugh.

He has that role model Freddy Brathwaite to look up to...

The brass hasnt forgotten about his reg. season and the Super Series #'s he's posted....he SHOULDVE made the cut...deservedly so but i was surpised that he was named starter..his #'s over there are back-up #'s....but we'll see...if i was in the brass he'd be on a short leash.

Case in point will be the big D-man who goes #2 in the next draft. That guy is going to be one of the greats, i'm almost certain.

Yup HUGE mistake for both sides....IMO there's gonna be half empty barns across the league.

I thought Binnington looked better every step of the way personally.... Won't surprise me if the roles are reversed by the end of the tourney. Regardless of Subbans numbers and the games he played previously it comes down to who is better at the very moment.... And right now thats been Binnington.

Only if they can survive the hell they're put through as they try to work their way up through the system. We kid ourselves if we think it's a level playing field for minorities. It isn't. It's better than it was a decade ago but far from where it should be.
