Should Steelers give Week 17 playing time to backups?

04:23 PM ET 12.26 | As much of an undisciplined slop-fest as it was, I have now put the Steelers' 2012 season in my rear view mirror. All I can say is that it was truly a shame to see what could have been a promising transition year go down the drain because of undisciplined play, a lack of accountability, and piss-poor decision making. But enough of me rambling, because it is "On To The Next One" readers as our boys in Black & Gold will face the Browns on Sunday afternoon. Although the game might seem to be a tad "meaningless" and hard to get excited about for many in Steeler Nation, I look at this weekend's contest as an important stage for some of Pittsburgh's deserving and key backups to shine and earn some quality playing time. As far as playing multiple backups goes, Pittsburgh's starting lineup on both sides of the ball has been littered with them all year. Players like Will Allen, Cortez Allen, Curtis Brown, Josh Victorian, and Chris Carter have all seen significant amounts of snaps from multiple starters going down at various points this year. Most importantly though, the Steelers are and will be in a rebuilding phase over the next two to three years. Thus, would it not behoove the franchise to see exactly what they have in terms of depth and future starters and evaluate how they perform in game situations before they go out and acquire more players? So, why, pray tell, does it matter if some guys ride the pine?

You want to evaluate Charlie Batch? I mean really I love Charlie but I'm thinking that further evaluation is not required.

The Steelers need to clean house.
Ben is done. Get Vick at least he will bring a new dimension to the Steelers.
Brown is done. Any WR will do.
Dwyer never was.
And our head cheerleader, Tomlin is done too. Surely there is a coach out there that knows, Medenhall on one leg is better than Dwyer with two.
Next find some DBs. Any elite team that is not smart enough to throw 50 times against the Steelers don't know the blueprint to beating our defense. Opposing teams should throw on the Steelers everydown and throw outside. When was the last time a Steeler DB jumped an outside route for a pick six. Even in the Bengals game the DBs never jumped that route and I counted at least 3 where the DB actually had better position than the WR but he was never playing the ball.
This team has too much talent to allow 3 players and dumb coaching to lead them to .500, almost, because we probably will lose to the Browns too.

WOW, Thats about all I can say after reading the complete trash you typed!
I'm a Browns fan and we would kill to have a QB as good as Ben when he's, like you said, DONE???
Just because you didn't make the playoffs doesn't mean you have to blow up the team. Did you really expect to make a SB run with all the injuries suffered this year ADDED to the fact that you have a new OC???

And as of yesterday, Richardson, Weeden, McCoy and a whole list of others are listed as questionable or out for Sundays game.
I think its pretty safe to say that the Steelers could win this one with a HC, QB and WR who are "Done"!
Jesus, you give Steelers fans a BAD name! Talk about fair-weather!

It has been a truly disappointing season, the team plays without "heart":there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency until the 2 minute warnings of the game. Put the backs-ups in? most have been playing all year due to injuries...

Unless you are blind in both eyes you should re-watch the last 3 games the Steelers lost. The 3 players I named are the reason they lost.
BEN, and only BEN lost that Bengals game.
BROWN lost the Cowboys game.
And I wouldn't put the Chargers lost on one player so I am putting it on Tomlin for not getting them ready to beat the Chargers.
Bottom line. The Steelers lost to teams that they should never lose to (Raiders, Titans, Chargers, Browns and Bengals). When the more talented team continues to lose to less talented ones it is the coaching.
And yes if I could replace Ben's huge salary with Vick and a couple of O-linemen, I would because Ben has benefit from the Steelers defense his entire career, something Vick and many other QBs never had. I have seen enough of Ben's bone head pick six plays at the worst possible moment. It's time for another direction.

Ben came back too early. He's gotta still be hurting, so why play him. I agree with Mr. Steeler on Charlie Batch....but he should get the start.

You truly are a fair-weather fan with little to NO knowledge of football! You're team didn't make the playoffs so you want to blow it all up??? Lets compare who well the Steelers have done when Ben's under center compared to Vick.
Ben- Comp% 63.1, TD's 188, Picks 95, Rating 92.5, Rings=2, SB appearances=3
Vick- Comp% 56.3, TD's 122, Picks 91, Rating 80.7, Rings=0, SB appearances=0
So basically you would go with Vick who has a lower comp%, less TD's even though he has played longer, lower rating and has never led his team to a SB let along won one??? Thats just crazy talk and it shows that you are not thinking as a true fan but someone who jumps on when the going is good not when it gets tough!!!
Oh, and if we use your logic the Giants should be looking to replace Eli because of the down year he's had??? How about you go and compare his stats to Ben and see who fairs better there. (hint, its Ben)
And Damn you for making me spend this much time defending a team I hate!

I thought the part about Brown and Tomlinson being done was pretty amusing too! As a Browns fan we will trade Ben for Weeden straight up right now! HA

Brown isn't done. He's a pretty good WR. That said, he shouldn't be returning punts. He makes way too many bonehead plays in the return game. Rainey should take over that duty.

The Steelers should be able to win with Batch; he's a better back-up than any of the Brown's back-ups. And I think you are right that BR isn't healthy yet.

It may not be a bad idea treat this last game the same as they do a 4th preseason game. The starters play a series or two and then the backups takeover.

Good idea, no sense in getting someone hurt (Heath Miller) the season is over for both teams, see what the youngsters can do. I doubt the Browns will back off, sweeping the Steelers would be like winning the Super Bowl for them, and set the tone for next year. As for the Steelers, I have not seen much fire in the team except for that second Ravens game.
