01:41 PM ET 12.27 | San Francisco 49ers defensive end Justin Smith has been out of action since Dec. 16, and according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, it's because the 12-year veteran has a partially torn triceps. Smith's injury came in the third quarter of the 49ers 41-34 win over the New England Patriots, as he pushed off an offensive lineman. The 49ers have already lost one player to a torn triceps this year, as outside linebacker Parys Haralson suffered the injury in a preseason game against the Denver Broncos and was placed on injured reserve. It is likely that Smith will require surgery to repair the torn muscle, but both he and the team remain hopeful that that he'll be able to play through the pain and be on the field for the 49ers in the playoffs.

Seems to me there have been more serious muscle injuries in the past few years than ever before. Probably steroid related.

Tough break for Smith and the Niners. They'll miss him in the playoffs.
