NHL may cancel All-Star Game

In the next few months, the NHL is going to take a long, hard look at the all-star weekend. The league may have tough decisions to make. While some league officials privately are wondering why the NHL continues to have the all-star game, there could be changes after next year's game is held in Montreal to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadiens. Though canceling the game seems a little harsh, there are proponents of that route in the NHL headquarters. At the very least, it would appear the skills competition is going to become a victim of the changes once the league figures out what direction it wants to take. There is no game scheduled for 2010 because of the Winter Olympics, but there is a chance the game could take a permanent hiatus. "This is a touchy subject," one league executive said.

not that it really matters... its like watching a game of pick-up hockey.

I think that it would be fitting that the last All Star game ever would be held to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens, especially with the tradition of All Stars and Hall of Famers which have been represented by that franchise over the last century. I think that the NFL should follow suit with the Pro Bowl. (Yawn!)

who cares

No one will miss it.

Just another ridiculous casualty of the Bettman regime. No one watches the Pro-Bowl, don't really watch the NBA All-star game, can't stand the fact the the home run derby takes almost 2 hours, the NHL All-star game is the only one I want to watch. He needs to go.

NHL may cancel NHL.

"Nobody has cared about the All-Star game since Mike Bossy retired!"

You could probably make that same argument about the Isles.

they sould get rid of Bettmen, the allstar game and the shootout. Manny Legace was right with his comment that the game sould be won and lost by the TEAM, not a shotout!

Shootout

January 28, 2008  10:54 AM ET

can't get rid of the alll star game... putting something on the line might be better, home ice or something... but i'd hate to see it go... that skills comp was ridiculus, i prefer to the old skills comp, the lap for the fastest skater, the stick handling relay, rapid fire, etc... whatever they called that relay skills event was ridiculus... i can't believe that someone thought it up, nevermind no one said, wait.... thats a horrible idea...

January 28, 2008  11:18 AM ET

The NHL has brought this upon themselves by not allowing any physical contact in this game! Without checking and the occasional fight, it's just like watching a bunch of people skate. If I wanted to do that, I could go to the local skatery.

The indoor All-Star game is stupid. The All Star game should be played out doors where more than 15 thousand fans could see the pros. If they did it outside, there could be meet and greets, the skills competitions could be better and the game itself should have some meaning. Let them play for money, that should work! Its boring watching no hitting and no fights. Or, better yet, the winner of the game gets 2 points, which could help determine home ice advantage in the finals.

Players need to be rewarded for their excellence... but I can understand where the NHL recognizes that its product needs to be reevaluated and potentially reworked. They have been relatively successful in doing that with other aspects of the game recently, and should find a way to get the All-Star Game -- and the Skills Competition -- back to some semblance of relevance...

January 28, 2008  11:53 AM ET

let it go

January 28, 2008  11:57 AM ET

The NHL All-star game would be fine if everyone in America had versus.

January 28, 2008  11:58 AM ET

1st off, no major network carried it.greg millen on cbc said"it was a showcas of talent, did you see that passing in the 3rd period.well duh,you idiot, when no one puts a stick down to stop the puck, what do you expect.last 1 i,ll view, pathetic, and the skills competition was a disaster.

I thought the NHL was on strike. When did that end?
