Upton back on the block

08:15 AM ET 12.28 | Arizona's signing of Cody Ross may yet put Justin Upton back in the mix of trade speculation. Depends who you ask, but it appears a possible trade for Upton has become a reality again. If the Diamondbacks thought they were strong in the outfield before they signed Ross to a $26-million, three year free-agent contract -- and they did -- they have to believe they are absolutely stacked in the outfield now. They will surely be entertaining offers, and as one person familiar with their thinking put it, flat out, "Someone will go." That means either Upton, the wunderkind who spends a lot of time on the trading block, Jason Kubel or Gerardo Parra is likely to be dealt.

Redundancy is the staple T&R modus operandi.

Agreed. I don't give a **** one way or another, but I'm tired of hearing about it.

Upton has taken the place of Greinke on T&R.

You are correct sir!

wiseup: I have said before I thought upton was overrated. Apparently other MLB teams must agree. He has been on trading block all off season and no team has shown any interest in upton.

How do you know no one has shown interest? Perhaps the D-Backs just want too much for him.

the teams HAVE show hugh interest in justin upton, but the teams haven't make any serious offer to the d'backs, rangers DO want justin but they have refuse to give any top prospect, in the other hand the d'backs are askin a fair trade!!

you may be tired already, but the rangers have to remain patient untill the d'backs lower their quality demands for justin, but then again every team needs to sacrifice top prospect in order to upgrade their needs!!

the d'backs are asking a fair amount of propects, it won't be a fair trade if the other team gets Justin upton for peanuts!!!

December 28, 2012  11:54 AM ET

rangers have been the serious team in that trade thing for JUSTIN UPTON but they do remain stingy and greedy in terms of sending top prospects to the d'backs,,,

December 28, 2012  11:55 AM ET

as far as we all know,, nothing should come cheap either the interested teams DO pay high quality prospects or don't trade at all!!

December 28, 2012  11:57 AM ET

the rays pull a blinded trade with the royals,, at the same time both teams got benefit though,,, angels pull another fair trade, but rangers still playing the cat to the mouse, and the mouse to the cat, who would likely win???

JD is getting too tricky. Our off season is in shambles. He needs to trade for Upton. Whats the use in having the greatest minor league prospects but never use them?

Agreed. I think he was smart not to overpay for the mediocrity out there this winter, but Arizona needs to deal Upton, and the Rangers need to make a move.

What the hell is wrong with Upton for Andrus? Toss in whatever you need to fill out the deal, but that one makes the most sense to me.

December 28, 2012  06:57 PM ET

He compares well to Matt Kemp up to age 25. I think the Diamondbacks have been asking too much. I think Upton has shown flashes of great talent and has a very high ceiling. I'd love to see the Cardinals in on him, but I don't see them doing it. They want to keep all those young power rms for themselves. John Jay and two of the better young pitchers would probably do it.

Why should any team feel "stacked" in the outfield because of adding a two-bit player like Cody Ross? Ross hit .240 with 14 HRs in 2011, and then hit .232 outside of Fenway Park in 2012. His overall 2012 numbers looked decent because of hitting so well in Fenway. He won't have that advantage in Arizona. He will return to being a below average, grossly overpaid corner outfielder in 2013. The Diamondbacks were fools to sign him to a $26M contract.

...Arizona plays in a pitcher's park, too...
