08:16 AM ET 12.28 | Like most MLB teams this time of year, the Orioles have some level of interest in any player they think could help. The latest name out there is Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak. ... The Orioles kicked the tires on Smoak -- who was dealt to the Mariners in a six-player trade in July 2010 for ace Cliff Lee -- each of the last two winters. And his name arose again recently when the Mariners traded for designated hitter/first baseman Kendrys Morales and signed free agent Raul Ibanez, creating a logjam at DH and first base. ... To get Morales, the Mariners traded away solid lefty Jason Vargas (another previous Orioles trade target), so Seattle could potentially use another starting pitcher. The Orioles have somewhat of a surplus there.

Where there's Smoak , someone could get fired

The Rangers fleeced the Mariners on that one, now the Mariners would love to pass it forward. Stay away from him Baltimore, far far away.

We also fleeced the Mariners with Adam Jones. THey owe us a fleece.

I'd have to agree. Smoak hasn't shown much so far, other than an ability to strike out.

With all of the other teams in their division making noise and improvements to their clubs the O's or either sleeping through the off season or they think they are good enough to repeat 2012 again in 13.

....davis is better than smoak with the glove at 1b, and davis found his stroke last year, very similar to the big swing of his idol hambone, so this ideal s not gonna happen

but but the orioles have fall in love with the player Smoak, should the mariners take the offer into consideration, the orioles shouldn't blame the mariners for Smoak inability to hit!!!

its a posibility the orioles do wanted to trade for Smoak for the DH spot, but the orioles would need to work hard in Smoak timming hitting!!!

Smoak has been a flop so far with the M's, so he might be available cheap (especially after the addition of Morales), and he might yet pan out big time. Low risk, high reward. I think the M's will keep him one more year--it seems like he starts to hit, then something happens--personal tragedy, injury, whatever. Might give it one more year before declaring him snakebit and moving on.

Or maybe they trade him for Justin Upton, straight up. Up and down play, mostly down, for steady average play. "But look at the upside!"
