12:51 PM ET 12.28 | Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed has been fined $55,000 for a hit on New York Giants receiverVictor Cruz, according to a report from Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. Reed was penalized for an illegal hit on a defenseless player during the fourth quarter of the Ravens' 33-14 win on Sunday after hitting Cruz near the sideline. The fine comes five weeks after the veteran defender was suspended one game (later overturned) after an illegal hit on Pittsburgh Steelers' receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Sure looked like a great hit/separation attempt to me. I checked it again on YouTube to make sure I saw it right. There's a funny but true title on one of the videos: "Pussification of NFL Continues".

My question is this: Why would ANYONE want to be a defensive player nowadays? You're a young kid and you're deciding what you want to be, at least in football terms. Would you want to be a defender with the current rules? You're gonna pay me a million a year to cover receivers? Fine, are you also going to reimburse me for all the fines they give me for playing the way I was taught?

The hit Chancellor had on Vernon Davis last week was legit. The penalty should never have been assessed.

It's getting to the point where these randomly-called penalties are affecting the games. Replay is showing that the calls are wrong as often as not. Right now, a coach can not challenge a penalty call, but perhaps the league should consider allowing that, particularly on some of these "judgement" calls.

It was a riotous hit give him back his money and fine the ref that threw the flag

As much as I detest anything Ratbird, I watched the hit on youtube and it is clean, nothing dirty, nothing worthy of a penalty let alone a $55,000.00 fine...

<I threw up a little in my mouth typing that>

the hit was not flag worthy, let alone fine worthy.

Then we are agreed. It was a bogus call and a bogus fine. Now who brought the whiskey?
