General managers on the hot seat, too

08:03 AM ET 12.31 | As the regular season moves to the postseason, coaches aren't the only members of the NFL's endangered species list. [It's] easy to forget that a fairly large number of General Managers could be getting the boot, too. Here's a look at the G.M.'s who are likely to go, those who are on the bubble, and those who are safe despite plenty of turmoil in their teams. On the endangered species list are Browns G.M. Tom Heckert, Jaguars G.M. Gene Smith, Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith, and Cardinals G.M. Rod Graves. (Already fired was Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney.) The bubble boys include Bills G.M. Buddy Nix, Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, and Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli. ... Lions G.M. Martin Mayhew arguably is on the bubble as to whether, well, he's on the bubble.

It doesn't seem like GMs are held accountable nearly as often as they should be.

I've always thought that. They're the ones who evaluate and bring in talent, and sometimes they're not very good. Say what you want, but you have to draft well.
Also, it's not always about getting Luck-y, as the Colts did, and having a horrible season followed up with the first pick, in which you get a stud QB to replace the one you've had for 14 years. Often, QBs are out there and not drafted until the third round or later (Seahawks and Wilson, Patriots and Brady). And you can't waste early picks repeatedly (Matt Millen!).

The Lions should fire Mayhew, get a new scouting system with new scouts; get a GM that is skilled at pulling the best players in later rounds; Schwartz has lost control of this team and you don't come back next season with a completely new mindset and philosophy, it doesn't work that way or that fast - The Fords will probably give both Schwartz and Mayhew another chance, but they sure don't deserve it - The same old thing, the Lions never make a play for a proven name coach or a proven GM, they're always searching out new guys to coach the team, and make bad choices to boot - The coaches the Lions have hired in the last two decades; they were never hired as a head coach anywhere else after they left the Lions; Mariucci, Fontes, Rogers, Marinelli, Ross, Morningwheig (Don McCafferty was a big name coach from Baltimore, the only one they hired, but he died before the season started) - There are so many coaches available now, it wouldn't hurt to take a couple out to dinner to explore what it would take for them to take over, Reid, Gruden, Smith, and others (dangle about $10 million per in front of them; Belichick gets $7.5 Mill; it's all about money like everything else) - The Lions have never thought big; they settle for second best or worse.
