Bears fire head coach Lovie Smith after 10-6 season

10:27 AM ET 12.31 | When we were at the halfway point of this season, many people expected the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears to make serious noise in their respective conferences as the No. 1 seeds in the playoffs. The Texans fell off hard and dropped to the No. 3 seed but the Bears' fall was much more severe, as the once 7-1 Bears finished the season 10-6 and on the outside of the playoff picture. Head coach Lovie Smith has paid the ultimate price for that epic collapse. While the defense of the Bears held its own all season long, the offense was an Achilles' heel of sorts, and Jay Cutler won't be taking any bullets for his coaches in Chicago. This likely means Mike Tice could ultimately follow Smith out the door in Chicago. The next question Bears fans need to ask themselves is this: how does a Jon Gruden/Jay Cutler pairing sound to you?

All the Bears need to do in the draft in April is get some O lineman and they will be alright on offense in 13.

I would dedicated the entire draft into drafting only offensive lineman , one or 2 has to stick. In 30 plus years of watching football I would say the Bears 2012 O-line was probably the worst in NFL history.

It's too bad they can't combine the Green Bay offense with the Chicago defense. That would be a good team. Smith is a pretty good coach but Chicago just doesn't seem to do enough with the talent they have. I agree with Flea about the O line but there are so many teams with bad O lines that it's tough to get good ones in the draft.

I had a feeling this was coming...
That O-line has been a problem for 3 seasons, and nothing was ever done about it. Even with a new GM in place, it was still a HUGE problem area for the Bears. I don't know if Lovie just assumed he could "coach 'em up", or if that's just the hand he was dealt... but changes needed to be made, and this is what the Bears have to deal with now.

Not in most cases, but this team started the season at 7-1, and limped its way through the second half of the season. His team might have loved playing for the guy, but he wasn't quite getting it done.
Now, it's all on Phil Emery, Ted Phillips and the McCaskey family. Lovie's out of the picture, as is Jerry Angelo. Nowhere else to point fingers anymore...

When you are the fifth highest paid coach in the NFL, people have the right to expect results. Missing the playoffs two years in a row doesn't cut it. He's a nice guy but, he isn't a great coach. At least not of the caliber that would justify his huge contract. He gone!!!

I have to agree. Chicago finished the season 3-5 last season, and 1-5 this season. Just looking at the record at the end of the season does not reveal the whole story.
